JB3451 Posted July 9, 2014 Share Posted July 9, 2014 Today it was raining and I was on the highway traveling ~60mph (car in front was going that fast) with the ACC engaged @70mph. There was a medium amount of road spray from the cars on front of me and I was going to get off at the next exit so I was going to change lanes. I put the turn signal on (the lane keeper system was on too) and started to merge behind another vehicle (light silver in color) that was about a car length away and that car started to slow for the exit. Thinking that the ACC would slow my car down when I got behind this car I was in for a surprise, the ACC acted like there was no car in front of me AND WENT FULL THROTTLE (to get back to 70mph). I quickly pressed on the brake to disengage the ACC but was very startled by the ACC's behavior. Is there anyone out there that has had this issue? Trying to figure out why the ACC did this. Was it the radar, camera, rain, lane change, vehicle distance variation (between the lanes) anybody? 0 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Waldo Posted July 9, 2014 Share Posted July 9, 2014 Most likely the rain. Were you able to look at the display? It will show you if it has detected a car in front of you or not. Do note that the owner's manual specifically says not to use the ACC in rain. Sure it will work in rain most of the time, but you must always be ready for it to make mistakes like the one you encountered. For the record, there is no interaction at all between the lane keeping system and the ACC. The ACC relies only on the radar, it doesn't use any input from the camera. Since the radar is pretty low, about 1 foot off the ground, it sees a lot more road spray than you do through the windshield. 0 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

FusionDiffusion Posted July 10, 2014 Share Posted July 10, 2014 If you merged right behind a car, the higher density of spray from being closer would effectively scatter the radar beam to to point it won't detect anything.
