  1. warranty or...?

The reason I am getting rid of my current car is rust. Seeing that kind of rust already seems disheartening.

Warranty took care of it. Yes. it is disheartening to see it. I had a Ranger that did the same thing. It was white and much easier to see.

  2. I am having a similar problem with my '08 Milan. The noise started out barely noticable but now (after a couple of months) is pretty easy to hear. It sounds like gear noise and increases in pitch as I speed up but is pretty much drowned out by road noise at around 40mph. At first I thought it might be tire noise but it is the same no matter what surface I drive on. The dealer couldn't hear it when I brought the car in a month ago. I am waiting a while until it is very obvious before I bring it back (it is almost ready now). My car has 17,000.

Probably a drive shaft carrier bearing going out. Mine did the same thing and was replaced under warranty.

  3. Thank you, Yes it does have hoses as well as an electrical connection. Am I right in thinking it turns gasoline vapor back to liquid?

It's just a storage system for the vapor. The ECU controls the purge solenoid and opens it so the vapor can be drawn into the engine. That's why you don't want to overfill your tank. You can get liquid gas into the canister assy and mess things up.

  4. 2009 SE V6. There is what looks like a good sized electronic box of some kind mounted under the car, and below the spare tire.

Can anyone tell me what it is?

It might be the carbon canister assembly. They're electronically controlled and in a black box type mount.

  5. One of my concerns is how it handles in the snow. I have a steep long driveway I have to climb to get to the office and would like some insight on how it handles in the snow. (I currently have an AWD audi that is great in the snow and know I am spoiled.)

    Thanks.

As the owner of a 2007 AWD Fusion, I can say you will not be disappointed with the handling in the snow.

  6. I appreciate the input! My knee is nowhere near the trunk release so I can't imagine hitting it and even if I did... I live in the city. Locking the car involves setting the alarm, looking at the car, taking a few steps away, stopping, turning around, hitting the lock button twice again and looking over the whole car, including trunk lid, again... Then worrying 5 minutes later about whether or not I locked the car, and occasionally going back just to double check. I'm not pig-headed enough to say it's NOT a possibility, but before going on vacation, I went out and checked on the car three times. And last night, I know I gave it the usual once-over, because I noticed there was a person in the car next to it and that always makes me nervous. That being said, I'll still take your advice to heart because unless I find a fault elsewhere, the only person I have to blame is myself.

That's interesting! I wonder if something in the trunk's lock is vulnerable to shocks, similar to the door in the Mazda 3?

Just went an did a little experiment with a rubber mallet. I dropped the seat backs and tapped around the latch with the trunk lid closed. Nothing happened. The escape handle hangs down and it doesn't take much pull to pop the lid. My bag must be snagging that handle.

  7. I was out of town a couple of weeks ago and came back to find my trunk open, my steering column busted open and all of my belongings strewn about the interior... (Thankfully, hot-wiring a car is not as easy as Grand Theft Auto would make it seem.)

As an urbanite, I know that such things are a part of life... I don't keep anything in the car, much less anything of value, and as long as the car itself was still there... I wasn't overly bothered by it.

HOWEVER... Something did bother me, something that seemed out of place... There was a T-shirt laying on my front floor, which had previously been sitting in my trunk and there was NO sign of break-in. I figured they HAD to have gotten through my trunk but could find no way how! Eventually, I accepted that I must have left the car unlocked because there was no other way they could have gotten in.

Last night however... I stopped in a Baskin Robbins for Ice Cream and came out 5 minutes later to a group of teenagers, two of whom were leaning up against the back of my car... I was annoyed, but figured they were just hanging out. Then I saw that one of them was opening my trunk!

They quickly explained that they'd "noticed it was open and were just trying to close it", while I took a quick head-count and realized that making a scene would only get me jumped and calling the cops would probably result in the same. Instead I just voiced my displeasure, got in their faces (I'm not a small guy), slammed my trunk closed and drove off, after which I cursed myself for not keeping a more level head because... HOW THE HECK DID THEY DO THAT?!?

I'm reminded of the Mazda 3, (which requires that you only hit the passenger door to unlock the car) and am curious if the Fusion/Milan/MKZ has a similar weak-point having to do with the trunk?

Here's something. I keep my 3 ball bowling bag in the trunk. Sometimes it shifts and pops the trunk open. It doesn't take much to make it happen either. I'll be tooling along and the "Trunk Open" light will come on. Never had that problem on any other car.

  8. If you swap the gauge cluster the car will know and it will beep whenever you back up and whenever you reach a certain speed (60-75 mph - somewhere in that range). Not sure putting back the original cluster will fix it, either. Your name is on the lease, so they'll know you did it. You don't want to be written up in the next edition of Stupid Criminals.

Pay the bill and be smart on your next purchase.

Is the mileage stored in the gauge cluster or the main computer(ECU)???

  9. I noticed a high pitch whine coming from my 07 Fusion V6 AWD, that I couldn't nail down where it was coming from. Dropped off at dealer for service and told them about it. Received call later that noise was from rear drive shaft and it would have to be replaced. Still under warranty :D Has anyone else had this type of problem yet?

Yup. It's probably a carrier bearing going bad. Mine was replaced last spring. Running fine now.

  10. Hello,

I'm looking at an AWD as a possible daily driver. I put 25,000 miles/year on my cars in heavy commuter traffic. I was wondering if any owners are putting a lot of miles on their AWD cars and, if so, what (if any) problems you encountered. I'd appreciate any information you could offer.

    Thanks for your time,

    JerseyGTO

I had a carrier bearing go out on my drive shaft. The whole drive shaft needed to be replaced to fix the problem. It took awhile to get the replacement part. It's running fine now.

  11. I was backing my 2008 Mercury Milan (120 miles on it) into the garage and got out to see how far I was from the wall. I smelled a rotten egg odor. It wasen't intense but I could smell it. I assume it's from the exhaust which are dual. Is this normal or do I have a problem?

    Thanks in advance.

I believe you'll get that smell until your catalytic converters warm up.

  12. It's the new name for Ford's line of TTGDI engines - Twin Turbo, Gasoline Direct Injection.

The first application is for a 3.5L version for the Lincoln MKS and Taurus next spring producing 340-350 hp. A premium/E-85 version can top out at 415 hp. V8 performance with V6 fuel economy.

There are also rumors that the F150 will get a version as well as the mustang. There is also a 2.5L version producing 270 hp (V6 power at I4 fuel economy) rumored for the Fusion (at some point).

All that HP is nice but will they require premium fuel?

  13. How many miles on your car now? I have almost 19k on my AWD and so far, no hint of problems, but will keep my eyes (ears) open for that noise.

Just over 10,000 miles. It started slowly. I thought it was tire noise at first. When I heard it going up my gravel drive I knew something was up. It's the front carrier bearing that's bad. The car is drivable, but it's real noisy now. I can hear it above the radio.I Hope that drive shaft gets here soon.

  14. I'd love to see what kind of differential they used in the front transaxle on the Fusion. It *seems* like it has some type of limited slip if people are reporting extremely balanced behavior in the snow. The fact you could run donuts in the parking lot suggests the rear does get plenty of power. I don't recall any of the car magazines doing any extensive testing to compare the various AWD systems. That would be an interesting read for sure.

When mine goes into the shop, I'm going to ask the Ford mechanic about the system. Maybe he'll explain it if he has the time.

It is a good car for the snow. I prefer driving it over my F150. The truck has more ground clearance but wanders around on acceleration in the snow.

We're getting a TON of snow right now. I can't see the end of my lane and when that happens, I don't go out.
