  1. Yeah, tell me about it. I am currently trying to figure out what to do with my 2008 Fusion. It has 66,000 miles and needs a new FNR5 tranny. Ford Customer Care won't help out at all with the bill. Thanks Ford!
  2. I just came across this while searching for tsb's for my FNR5 trans http://www.redlineoil.com/product.aspx?pid=51&pcid=9. Has anyone used this product from Red Line? Any opinions?
  3. Thank you for the additional info. I was misinformed by the parts department at a local Ford dealer. Also, the part of my owner's manual that I first looked at just called the fluid "Ford Automatic Transmission fluid" and showed that the 6 speed transmission used "Ford Premium Automatic Transmission Fluid" and gave no other specifications. I appreciate your help and will keep this info in my records. It's awesome to find others on this forum that are willing to help.
  4. Need help please! We are the original owners of a 2008 Fusion 2.3 with the FNR5 5 speed auto with 66,000 miles on the vehicle. We currently have the vehicle at the dealer because of hard shifting and burnt trans fluid. The diagnosis is an internal failure and the entire transmission will have to be replaced. I've spent several hours on the phone with Ford cutomer care and they will do nothing at all to help us. Ford is saying that it is the dealer's responsibility to give us assistance or not, they're just throwing the dealer under the bus. We are currently waiting to hear back from the dealer for an estimate. A previous estimate from another dealer was over $4,600 for a REBUILT trans. Ford customer care says there is nothing they will do and that we should have bought an extended warranty and have all maintenance performed by Ford technicians. I have been a mechanic since I was 14 and do all of my own work except for something like a transmission issue. I can't afford to pay Ford to do my preventative maintenance and I'm extremely picky about who works on my vehicles. I change my engine oil & filter around every 3,000 miles with full synthetic and I follow the owner's manual for everything else. The owner's manual gives no specific info on changing the trans fluid (except for torque shift trans, which does not apply to me), it just says to inspect fluid level and condition at 30,000 mile intervals. I've done this at the oil changes that were around 30k and 60k with no issues. My mom has the same car (year, model, and tranny) and had her fluid inspected at 30k (it was fine) and just last week at 52k. The fluid was dirty and she had it flushed at this mileage. The only reason my mom had the fluid inspected last week was because of the issue I'm having with my Fusion. Can anyone help me with info on who to call except Ford Customer Care, because they sure don't care about me and my problem. Has anyone else had any issues with the FNR5? It's disgusts me that I have to replace a transmission in a car that I've owned & meticulously cared for since new, at only 66,000 miles. That,s only 6,000 miles over the powertrain warranty.! Thank you in advance for any info!
  5. I swear by synthetic. We tested ourselves in college in engine rebuild class with 2 1.9l ford I4 engines. Synthetic in 1, mineral based in the other. Ran for 15 minutes then drained oil. With no oil in the engines, we ran both engines til failure. The mineral based locked up in 1 hour running at idle. The syn, took several classes (3 hours per class) and a lot of reving before it locked up. This is why synthetic, for only $4 more per 5 qt conatiner at Wally World, is my choice hands down. As far as weight, always use the 5w20. 5w30 and others will trash your fuel mileage, my friend lost 4 mpg when he changed to 5w30 in his Fusion.
  6. My 2008 Fusion I4 is also doing this. Just started last week, 60,000 miles. Fluid is dirty and problem starts as the car gets hotter (driven longer, warmer weather). I think it is related to TSB 08-24-1. Google it and see what your dealer will do. My car is going in next week. Good luck.
  7. I just found out about this today & I'm pretty sure my Fusion fits this TSB. My tranny starts shifting hard as it gets warmer, especially on up shifts 2-3 and not as bad 1-2 and 3-4. 4-5 is fine. The TSB shows this happening when tranny temp is 212 or higher which could relate to my problems not starting till it gets hot. I think I'm gonna have a fight on my hands since my warranty is up. It's pretty shady if they won't honor the repair of a TSB after warranty. The original reason for TSB's was to protect the consumer when known problems occurred with certain vehicles and models. This doesn't seem to be the case anymore. Recalls only happen if the occupant's safety is affected by the maintenance issue. Sad how Ford treats their clients...
  8. That's awesome. I love the "lmgtfy.com". Thank you, I will be using this in the future...ha....
  9. Unfortunately I don't think Ford has learned their lesson. I grew up with fords and knew nothing different til I bought a 1998 Chevy Silverado. Since then, I've had 9 GM products. Only 1 of the 9 GMs was a probmatic vehicle, the other 8, which were bought new and used, cars and trucks, were great. I have owned . I have now owned 8 Fords (including my Fusion) of which 7 were probmatic. I am a Mustang lover, but unfortunately the only Ford I've had that was reliable was a 1986 Ranger 2.3l. And by probmatic, I don't mean brake jobs and wearable parts. I'm referring to things that shouldn't break or go bad like the trans @ 60,000 miles, rear main oil leaks (every Ford 5.0), plastic intake manifold failures, etc.... I was really hoping that things were different with the Fusion. I was bummed that my 2.3l Fusion got the same fuel mileage as our 2004 Impala 3.8l. Now I'm having reliability issues, oh crap........
  10. Same here. Mine is a 2008 with the 2.3l with 60,000 miles and started shifting hard. There's a TSB (08-24-1) that may be related, but according to the TSB it will only be covered under the vehicle's original warranty. My powertrain warranty just ran out (60,000 miles). This will be my very last Ford, back to GM I go...
  11. The owner's manual doesn't give the spec, only the name and Ford part number. It's actually the same fluid Ford uses for the manual tranny also. I found this out today at my local Ford dealer. The stuff is $9 a quart. You're better off having them flush & fill because you will NOT get all of the dirty fluid out. I have been a mechanic for 20 years and fixed my own vehicles. Unfortunately, I too have to take my Fusion in for this. My problem is also having hard shifts and I am the original owner with 60,000 miles on the car. I'm not too happy right now. I think I'll be switching back to chevy.
