  1. Here's the deal. 2006 Fusion SE V-6 with just under 90,000 miles. Warm (hot), dry weather. Car running fine the night before. Start it the next morning and the check engine light is flashing and the engine is loping badly. Take it to my local mechanic. His little hand-held code reader says that there is a problem with the #1, #2, and #4 cylinders, a general intermittent misfire fault, and that the engine is trying to adjust/reset timing. Mechanic sends me to the local Firestone dealer that does computer diagnostics. (This is a small town, and the service department of our local Ford dealer has a horrible reputation.) Firestone decided it was the #4 cylinder, and when they pulled the coil pack, the shaft was cracked and melted. They replaced the coil and the spark plug, fired it up, and promptly melted another coil pack. Then they decided that it either had to be the PCM or the wiring harness. They ran a jumper wire from the PCM to the coil and still had the problem. According to the tech, the coil is not grounding to create the spark, which is why it's overheating and melting. Says it has to be either the coil or the PCM, and since we had the problemwith both the old and the new coil, the PCM is the most likely culprit. There are no PCM fault codes. Firestone doesn't deal with PCM issues, so the car is towed to the nearest large Ford dealer, 40 miles away. The Ford dealer says that it is the PCM, which is being replaced, that this is a well documented issue with the 3.0 V-6, that there is a TSB on it, and that in addition to the PCM, I need to replace all 6 coil packs and all 6 spark plugs. At 90,000 miles, I don't mind the plugs, but the coil packs (at $115 a pop) sound like a screw job. The Ford dealer says they will not warranty the new PCM if I don't replace all of the coils. I cannot find the claimed TSB. Does any of this sound reasonable?
