I pulled the pump for grins, and it was intact, and with minimal wear and gear lash, looks like it would still be able to pump. Top of the piston was unscarred - since it severed from the bottom of the piston, which was in pieces at the bottom of the sump. The wrist pin was wedged so highly, it took 3 hammer blows to break it free from the block's hole. Except for where I was hitting it, there were no pertinent marks on it either, well, except for where it was punched in the opening.
The rod - part of the end cap bolt was left in the upper rod threaded section....so, was it a rod bolt failure that undid it all? The bang/kick to the back of the seat, followed by the rod loosely hitting the crank and then blasting through the block? The missing section of the rod was not to be found, so maybe the rod had a weakness in this location? I'll never know and the old motor's off to the scrap yard on Monday.
BTW - the 'new 2008 long block' is alive and purring well....700 miles over the holidays. The fuel mileage isn't as good as what it replaced, so maybe there's some additional stuff to look at, or have a dealer reprogram...?
