For a few weeks now there has been a whining noise getting worse and worse (first intermittent, then more regular and loud, especially at start-up and while turning). I assumed it was the power steering pump, which I replaced a few days ago. This made the whine lessen but there is a little chirp about a second after I start the engine up (sounds just like the same whine but only for a second, like the belt getting tension) and then at idle it almost sounds like a faint chirp or rattling sound which now goes away once rpms go up. After a day or two the constant whine is completely gone now (before the pump swap it was constant whenever the engine was on, even at idle and while traveling straight) but the steering is a bit heavier, especially low speed (low rpm) turning. Backing my car into a parking space at work this morning was next to impossible as the wheel was very heavy and sluggish and the whine was back and loud as ever for this maneuver. The auxiliary belt seems tight and when changing the pump the idler pulley didn't seem too easy to loosen up, I guess I could replace it and see if this helps but I'm sick of guessing. I'm almost worried I got a bad replacement pump? Also doesn't seem to be leaking fluid anywhere, topped power steering fluid off after changing pump (perhaps a little overfilled) and it is still full. Anyone have any ideas? 2008 Ford Fusion 2.3L I4 5-speed manual
