  1. Hello, I have a 2015 Ford Fusion SE 1.5L EcoBoost FWD. I was wondering if anyone could give me an explanation of what I'm looking at here and any suggestions where oil might be leaking from. I haven't worked on cars newer than 1999 before and I have never worked on a FWD four cylinder so I have no idea what I'm looking at half the time. I circled a part in green, not sure what it is but I'm guessing it's some kind of vacuum solenoid? I also circled a hose in blue, I believe it is an oil hose and I thought the leak was coming from there but I tightened it and still have a leak. It looks like oil is dripping from the area circled in red, but again I have no clue what I'm looking at. Any help would be great! Thanks!
  2. Earlier today a buddy of mine changed my oil. He had me pull the car onto a ramp, and after he drained the oil and changed the filter he had me start the car and back down the ramp, and I did because I didn't realize he didnt put the new oil in it yet. It took maybe 30 seconds total, maybe a little less. I've driven it a couple of miles since then without any odd noises or anything. Is it likely that ive done some sort of serious damage to the engine?
  3. Hello. I have a 2007 Fusion 2.3L manual 5spd that i have recently replaced the engine. The engine is an "early build(cartridge style oil filter, non-California)". I was told it was out of a 2009 Milan with only approx 105k miles. I have had no issues except for an occasional stall when coming to a stop, but recently discovered it to be an oil burner. It uses about 1qt every couple of days and i only drive about 20mi/day. I did a Compression test that revealed the lowest cylinder to have 157psi of compression. Im considering PCV failure to be the culprit. Has anyone else had a similar experience?

  5. I have a 2007 Fusion with the 3.0L V6 with about 130,000 miles on it. Bought it used in 2010 with under 40,000 on it. It has always run great, no issues whatsoever, up until about a year ago, literally right after it rolled over to 100,000 miles. Around then, the CEL came on occasionally (and went off on its own) and I noticed it started burning oil. Or, the oil fairy was coming and stealing it. I'd never once seen any kind of smoke come out of the tailpipes of this car, nor caught a whiff of anything out of the ordinary. The engine was always clean, no spots in the garage, so it MUST have been burning it. My mechanic told me that some cars just do that (I've always driven clunkers, so it seemed odd to me that a car would burn oil without there being some kind of malfunction...) but my dad confirmed (my dad being an engine machinist for 25+ years) and said as long as it wasn't much, there was no knocking, the car ran well, and I topped it off when necessary that it was no big deal. Fast forward to December of last year, the CEL came on and stayed on, and on the way home one day I heard some engine noise that sounded a lot like an engine running w/o oil...lo and behold I was down 2 quarts. I was about 600 miles shy of an oil change. i added the oil and it was fine. Around 1,000 miles shy of the next change-same thing. Down 2 qts again. Added oil and made a note to check it again 500 miles later. Sure enough, it was low again. So it continued-I check my oil every 500 miles, and I noticed that the closer I get to an oil change the faster it was burned. I switched to reg oil from synthetic at this point bc I couldn't see wasting the money on synth just to burn it. Literally burning money. In March, the car wouldn't start one morning. when it finally did, it ran rough and the CEL light was on. I checked the oil and it was bone dry. I ended up adding almost 4 quarts and then driving it to the mechanic (1/4 mile away). He ran the codes and said it was the VCT solenoid, and said that it was torched bc I ran it out of oil. Ok, Im not a mechanic, but I'm not the typical idiotic woman driver who doesn't even know what a dipstick is-the car ran fine the night before, no noise, no performance issues, so how was I supposed to know? I bit my tongue and told him I had checked it earlier that week (my usual 500 mile interval) and it was fine. He suggested I start checking it more frequently than that. He said he was not an "engine guy" and suggested I take it to the dealership to get it properly diagnosed since the VCT and the disappearing oil were symptoms of a greater ill. No duh. Post VCT solenoid (bank 2) and gasket set, the car ran better but the oil issue remained as bad as ever. I had to check the oil at every fill up. The pattern remained the same-the closer I got to 3,000 miles, the faster it would go. Still no smoke, still no spots under the car. EVER. Last week, the car started struggling to go up hills at highway speeds. I get some bucking, like the timing was off. It was worse when the car was warm-never had the problem on the same hill at the same speed if the car was cool (first thing in the morning or just first trip of the day.) checked oil-very low. 3 quarts. Added oil and it was better but not eliminated. CEL light came on. Over the next few days, the car first started having trouble accelerating from a stop, at low speeds, AND at highway speed. Coasting and idle were ok and the oil was level ok. Then, one day it stalled out at the gas station. No, it wasn't out of gas-I pulled in bc it was running so awful I wanted to get off of a busy road. It wasout of oil. I added 5 quarts!! i had just checked it the day before-I had driven maybe 30 miles! Once I added the oil, I did top off the gas tank (since I was there) and then the car wouldn't start. it would turn over and sputter and die. On the third attempt it started normal and ran normal. ?? I started to drive home (about 10 miles away) despite having somehwere to be bc I knew I would just get stuck. sure enough, the CEL started flashing and I had to pull over twice so it could stall out. I got it home, barely. I got some advide that maybe my plugs are bad (oops, I did overlook the scheduled maintenance suggestion to change them) so I took it to Firestone (not my usual mechanic bc he was going to charge too much for it). They wouldn;t even do the work-they ran a diagnostic on it (for no charge, saving me a $100) and told me that I needed major engine work and they didn't want to take my money for nothing if I ended up needing a new engine or a new car. I asked for the codes and they said it read: P0022, P0022, and P0020. Turns out, one of those means the VCT solenoid I just had replaced in March was bad. I took it back to my mechanic to make good on the 6 month warranty he gave me on the $500+ job, and he told me he'd do it, BUT-he would not give me another warranty because I still haven't figured out the disappearing oil issue. Fine. Probably all done going to him, since i get better prices for basic maintenance work/repairs at Firestone, and they don't treat me like an idiot. Now, I picked the car up from the mechanic on Wednesday morning-"All fixed-no codes, fresh oil, ran great on test drive" according to him-and then almost didn't make it home Wed night. There i was, in rush hour traffic, 8 months pregnant in this awful summer heat with no A/C because the car couldn;t handle the additional load going 40mph (at most-less up a few hills) on the highway. I had to pull over 6 times. It died twice in the breakdown lane as I approached a stop. CEL flashing at me here and there, but never once did it come on solid. Still, I don't need a stupid light to tell me something is wrong-the car was sputtering. When I finally got home I backed it into the garage with all intentions of coming out after dinner to poke around and check some things out to report to my dad in an attempt to figure out WHAT is wrong with this car. It was then, after dinner, that i noticed the drips of oil up the driveway leading to one, then another puddle (about a cup of oil each, I'd estimate), where I had stopped to make the turns so I could back in, then to a BIG puddle of oil under the front right side of the car (about a quart there). The oil seemed a little thin-I might have detected some gas, but I don't know. could be from the lawnmower ;-) The oil seems to be coming out of the right side of the engine. (Timing chain side). But, its kind of everywhere, so its hard to tell. It doesn't leak when its not running. Also, I noticed oil welled up around that new solenoid. Not sure what info is relevant, so I'm giving a lot in hopes that someone somewhere can see amongst all this the answer I seek: What went wrong with my engine? My dad's buddy is going to tow the car to his garage tonight, and I'd kinda like to have a heads up on what to expect him to say-both to mentally prepare myself for bad news and so i know the guy isn't pulling my chain... BTW- there is no more oil in the engine. And, when I started the car briefly to move it (8 mos pregnant-couldn't get under it to clean the oil up) no lights were on, it started, and ran mostly normal.
  6. So here's some history with my car, which I recently updated... Disappearing oil I finally got that squared away. Car runs GREAT, btw. The only reason I have it in the shop is because the CEL is preventing the car from passing inspection. I was gonna just roll with an uninspected car until I got caught, but, RI just got a fancy new computer system at the DMV (a couple million dollars later) and now they know when your sticker expires. I got a letter telling me to get it inspected or ELSE. My mechanic is currently closed, long term-ish (health problems and location issues), so I took it to the Ford dealership. I had to anyway because of that airbag recall so I could get a rental (free rental for a few months is the perfect band-aid for this inspection issue.) I figured too that if its a ECM problem, they'd be the ones to fix it anyway, so I might as well just go to the source. Well! I remember why I hate the dealership... They quoted me: $2,000.00+ for new VCT solenoid+timing chain replacement (and all associated gaskets, fluids, and other parts)+cam shaft phaser kit $475 for rear brakes (pad+rotors) $60 light bulbs for my license plate $45 wiper blades You do the math. I can't, I'll barf. That's more than the car is worth now. Oh, and I jut spent $1300 on front brakes, tranny flush, blower motor replacement, rear main gasket replacement, ocv replacement, and new tires. Why? Cuz I LOVE my Fusion. I called a few places and on average that rear brake job is $250-275 so I told the dealership to forget that bit, and I'll change the bulbs and blades myself thankyouverymuch. So that brings me to the other bit: the engine troubles, which, as I stated, I haven't noticed except the pesky CEL. I love the way my car runs. Its got balls when I need it to, which is often due to the lack of adequate lane length for proper acceleration on the highways I travel. If I had an acceleration problem I'd know it! It doesn't make noise, shake, lose fluids (anymore), stall, knock, or blow through gas. I find it hard to believe that so much is wrong with my engine. My concern however is that there IS so much wrong with my engine after me driving around for 25,000 miles with inadequate oil levels off and on. I mean, I did the best I could, was vigilant about checking the levels, getting it changed, and paying attention to performance clues, but, there were times the thing ran dry. I'm very skeptical of dealerships (got majorly hosed by one in my 20's and it'll never happen again!) so I asked the tech to give me the codes: P0022, same as it always is! Why does this problem keep coming back? My regular mechanic said, right before he closed, that he wanted to replace the solenoid (VCT) and see if that didn't fix it. I suggested that to Ford and they said, yeah, maybe it would, but if it doesn't we would have to charge you double labor to take the whole thing apart again. We usually just replace the phasers and solenoids, along with the timing chain, and all the associated gaskets and seals, etc, since "we're already in there, and due to the age and mileage of your vehicle." It kind of sounds like they are saying they do this work "just in case" and not because its necessary. IS it necessary? Is there any way to tell? They said they did NOT visually inspect the timing chain and its components, because if they did they would have to charge me for the labor and they would be obligated to also charge me for "seals" and most customers are not willing to pay for this level of diagnostics. Well, I guess I'm not either. Is there any other way to tell if I actually need a timing chain? Could it just be the tensioners/gears (sorry, I'm not a mechanic, in case I'm not using the right terms). If so, can't they just replace that? It would be excellent if someone here has experienced something similar (P0022 over and over, oil leaks, timing problems) and can chime in as to the solution, perhaps additional tests/questions I should ask, likelihood that these repairs are necessary (based on history of low oil, not just "age of vehicle and mileage (152K, btw)), and if so, likelihood that I'll get another 2 years out of this car (how long the inspection sticker is good for, and about as long as it'll take to pay off my other cars so I'll be ok to start paying for a new one.) Let me know if you need any more info.
