sdotman21
Hey all, New member to the Fusion club with some questions. I've had this 2017 Ford Fusion SE for less than a month now and just ran into my first issue. Was doing some regular city driving and the "Engine Coolant Over Temperature" alert came up. A few moments later, smoke was coming from under the hood and what looked like antifreeze, leaked out entirely. Of course, called roadside and had it taken to a dealership immediately where they inspected the car over a course of 2 days. After the service checks, the dealership was unable to find anything wrong with the vehicle, even any leaks, and said its running fine. Now I've gotten the car back, but noticed today that the temperature on the vehicle was quite high when I had it on park, photo attached. You guys think its related? Any suggestions? As you see, the car has just 400 miles on it!
akirby
Sounds like a fan problem. Definitely not normal. Should be an easy diagnosis and fix for the dealer as long as you can recreate it for them.
sdotman21
Thanks. Did some additional research and it seems as though it might be the radiator fan thats causing this. I'm just confused on what would cause this to happen so soon. The code that had come up was P0117.
akirby
It's rare but sometimes you just get a bad part from the beginning or it could just be a loose connector. Should be a quick and easy fix either way.
zip89105
Save your pictures & paperwork. If you're dealer keeps saying nothing is wrong lemon law the vehicle.
drolds1
Welcome to the forums. This discussion has been moved from the Welcome forum as that section is not intended for technical discussions. It's aggravating to have an issue like this with a brand new car but sorry, there has to be reason that a car with 400 miles overheats and loses all its coolant. Your dealer's response to this situation is unacceptable. If nothing else, after an overheat event, as you've described it, they should be ensuring that there was no serious engine damage. Getting that hot in an aluminum engine can result in a warped head. or other problems. Did you have a CEL before or after it started overheating. P0117 =Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Circuit Low Input. This code is triggered when coolant temp reaches at least 250ºF. If it was before, it was a warning but this can also be generated after an overheat condition. They're saying it's running fine but your temp guage is on the high side. It should be around the middle. I agree that the most likely culprit is the cooling fan. This is controlled by PCM from the signal received form the engine temp sensor that generated the code. It's supicious that they couldn't find anything. Engines don't overheat for no reason. Edited June 9, 2017 by drolds1
sdotman21
Thanks everyone. I had the car towed back to the dealer yesterday and waiting on updates from them. The CEL came on before it started overheating. I managed to turn the car on before it got towed back and the temp gauge did stay in the middle of course. I just hope they're able to replicate the issue there again to understand my frustration. I really have no idea why it would be going so high but do hope that the cooling fan is the issue. I'll update all soon.
andyross
If it's not a fan issue, could be a defective thermostat or some sort of partial blockage.
sdotman21
Hey everyone - sorry for the delay but here's an update on everything....any help counts. After the car was sent back on the 8th, I received it back on the 13th. Dealership stated that they replaced a fuse that wasn't clicking the radiator fans on and thus causing it to overheat. The car ran fine but the very next day I had issues with the AC as it would turn on, but no actual air would push out. After some repeated on/off's with the car, it finally clicked on. Fast forward to a June 20th, and the car overheated AGAIN. The dash lit up with "Engine Coolant Over Temperature" again after I was simply driving in stop and go traffic. I then had it towed immediately to the dealership for service again and haven't seen the car since. I've also had to start the buy back process and get a case opened. While I was supposed to receive some sort of resolution from ford today, they've let me know that they need an additional weeks time in reviewing all the paper work and details. The rep also stated that they are also working through some wiring issues on the vehicle. I really like the car, but this never ending issues are a headache. At the time the vehicle was towed, I only recorded 618 miles since receiving it brand new in May. Has anyone on here every gone through the buy back process?
