Add Device & Apple Carplay

Recommended Posts

Sometimes when I am just going on a short trip I leave my phone in my pocket and just use the source of Pandora or Phone for music, and if I get a call or text the built in functionality for it. 99% of the time though I plug in my phone to get Carplay (or Android Auto).

I really dislike the built in NAV on my 2017 Escape with SYNC 3, I tried to use it, but it was already out of date in 2017, and it has odd ideas on entering parking lots and use of back streets. I also like using stored addresses for my contacts and mapped out addresses from my phone or logged in computer, they show up in recently search for which saves time.

If I don't need nav (and I use nav all the time, even when I know where I am going so I get the speed trap warnings, accidents, slowness, time to arrive, alternate routes by time, etc) I don't plug in my phone, but that is when I drive around a mile, anything more I want AA/Carplay.

I use Apple Carplay. Is there any good reason to add my phone via bluetooth?

Hi FordFusion.  Sorry, I am a little confused by your question.  To use CarPlay, you must connect via USB. If you are happy using your phone through the CarPlay interface only, then you do not need to connect your phone via Bluetooth.

However, if you want to use your phone through the SYNC interface, then yes, you would need to add your phone via Bluetooth.

You can always add your phone to Bluetooth, and only connect it when you wish to.

Sorry if I am misunderstanding your question and/or what you are trying to do.

I use AA Maps 99% of the time... I wanted to get the Nav APIM so that when I'm going through areas that I don't get data on my phone, I would at least have maps....

Mine are 015 so really old... but I don't need them to be accurate...

Being I swapped the APIM out, I doubt I'll get the 017 maps (or 018 when they come out) and I'm not going to pay 150 for them...

It sucks to be in the US for that... the EU/UK get them for free, although still old

You can download maps on your phone. I do it all the time for places I go that I won't get service (mountains of New Mexico, Mexico, local so they render quickly), and they update them fairly frequently. In Maps, go to the hamburger menu (2 lines), select Offline Maps. I keep local, the main highways I drive to places on, and those remote destinations.

Personally for the reason outlined above, might as well add it as a bluetooth device before some reason you need to and it won't let you because you are driving (even a passenger cannot do it when moving). Another reason I use Bluetooth is when my phone battery is really dead, and I want to charge faster than the USB port (it is slow, often times it won't be able to charge more than the phone is discharging in use, even with the screen off) before I get to where I am going.

I see no down side to it, get it added, setup (enable or disable download of phonebook, etc) and you are good to go. Even with all the family phones added, I picked one as the primary, but it is also easy to select a different one as needed. Who ever is driving is in charge of the tunes and who gets to use their phone hands free.
