Heated steering wheel

How does the heated steering wheel automatically turn on in 2020 ford fusion?

My wife doesn't like the heated steering wheel on every time she gets in the car.

I showed her how to turn it off but she wants to know why she has to.

Thanks,

Hi dna. The settings are in the Drivers Information Center. Essentially, you need to turn off the auto setting for that feature.

You (or your wife) can either sit in the car and scroll through the settings one day, or you can check your Owners Manual for the correct steps in the DIC menu to access the correct settings.

You can also download the PDF version of your Owners Manual here: https://www.fleet.ford.com/parts-service/resources/owner-manuals/

I find it is often easier to access information and scroll through the manual on a nice big computer screen, as opposed to flipping through the pages of the hard copy.

Good luck.

There isn't any "Drivers Information Center" in the Ford manual.

I down loaded the manual and could not find any reference to this.

Is there another name for this?

The Drivers Information Center is the entire dash readouts and the features they display. The settings you are looking for are accessed and controlled by the thumb buttons on the left side of the steering wheel.

You need to sit in the car and experiment with those control buttons/switches to find the setting, or find the correct pages in the Owners Manual for the instructions on how to use them. Until you/your wife learn how to use those control buttons (and others), you will be missing out on a lot of great features that your Fusion possesses.

Good luck.

I thought I asked a fairly simply question. I didn't need a condescending answer. I couldn't find an answer in the manual (I do know how to search for things in a document)

Why should I have to sit in the car a scroll through buttons to find things that Ford decided I needed. What is wrong with an off/on button?

Why does my car have to be an entertainment center instead of a car?

Why do I have to constantly search to find out how to turn useless crap someone in Detroit thought was "cool"?

I'm sorry but modern cars give me a pain with all these nannie controls -  (end of rant)

I enjoy driving where you have to pay attention to driving and not have distractions.

I'm glad this is my wife's car.

Hi dna. It was not a condescending answer. In fact, it was meant as a very friendly answer. It is what I also needed to do, to learn all the features of my car.

Condescending (or even rude) would have been if I had told you to "RTFM" (Read the f------g Manual), or asked you if you would also like one of us to drive to your house and turn it off for you, as one or two of our members might do (in a sarcastically humorous way). No...I tried to help.

The settings are usually controlled by the thumb buttons on the left and right side of the steering wheel, or directly on the screen display touches. There are two reasons I can not simply tell you what to press: First...I have an MKZ and the buttons/button sequences I press are different than the ones you need to press in a Fusion (In fact, the MKZ also has a dedicated button, as you wish you had). Second...Even if the buttons and press sequences were the same, I only know how to use them when I am sitting in my car and it all plays out in front of me. I do not have the buttons and sequences memorized well enough to be able to type out "Press this button up, press Okay, scroll down to X, press this button left...etc" while sitting at the computer in my house. You certainly can not blame me for that.

Therefore, unless another member will type out the correct sequence of buttons for you to press in the Driver Information Center menus, I recommended you (or your wife, since it is "her car") do what I and most of us have had to do. Sit in the car and play around with the settings to learn them, or find the instructions in the Owners Manual and then sit in the car to learn them hands on.

And yes...the instructions are in the Owners Manual. It may not have been easy for you to find, but they are there. I do not have the page number memorized, but they are there. And I know it is in your Owners Manual, because I downloaded your 2020 Fusion Owners Manual to check for myself, before I answered your first post.

And if I can find them in your Owners Manual for you, so can you.

Concerning your statement that "I do know how to search for things in a document".  Start by looking in the Index under "Heated Steering Wheel". And read closely, so you do not miss the redirection to the Information Center page numbers. That is how I found it. So do not be mad at me that you could not find it.

Again...You may have better luck if you download the PDF version and look there, as I did for you. I do find it easier than flipping through the hard copy: https://www.fleet.ford.com/parts-service/resources/owner-manuals/

And before you begin to wonder and/or ask why I did not just post the page numbers? The reason is many of us have been through this often before. There are different print editions and they can vary slightly in page numbers. Therefore, offering page numbers instead of recommending the person look it up in the Index of their own copy often winds up with that person coming back to insult us and tell us it is not there, when they can not find what is there. As you just did. So as they say..."No good deed goes unpunished".

As far as what you feel about your car (or your wife's car) being an "entertainment center", searching for "useless crap", "nannie controls", how Ford did or did not equip your (or your wife's) car, and being "glad this is my wife's car"? It is yours and your wife's car, so you are certainly entitled to your opinion.

Bottom line is...If you and/or your wife do not actually take the time to get to learn your 2020 Fusion, by sitting in the car and scrolling through the features in the Drivers Information Center and/or using the Owners Manual, she will miss out on a lot of great features. Yes, it can be a complicated vehicle for those who like simple vehicles that only take you from Point A to Point B.  However, it is what we all need to do to learn and be comfortable with all the features.

And the instructions on how to do what you first asked are certainly in the Owners Manual. Again...I know because I took the time to download and read it, in an effort to help you. Again, with no good deed going unpunished.

We are all here to help each other when and where we can, and that was what I took the time to do, and in a very friendly manner. So keep that in mind before you falsely accuse me or others of doing otherwise in the future.

Good luck.

Although this is an old post, I just wanted to reply in case anyone has this issue.  My heated steering wheel comes on by itself intermittently, even if the climate system is completely off.  Per the manual, it is not controlled by the driver information center (steering wheel controls). Heated steering wheel is only controlled by the center screen (navigation screen).

The solution: defect in the system. needs to be repaired at the dealership. I hope this helps everyone with a 2020 fusion down the line. Note: I have the Sony navigation system.

Hi m3echan1zr and welcome to the Ford Fusion Forum. What you are calling the "navigation screen" is also more commonly referred to as the SYNC screen, since it is the main component of the SYNC system and is not a navigation only screen. On certain Fusion models, it also contains information as part of the Driver Information Center.

The heated steering wheel can seem to come on by itself "intermittently", if certain system settings are set to AUTO in the Driver information Center. That is the setting controlled by the Driver Information Center controls. And as my post, which you quoted, states, this information was obtained directly from the 2020 Fusion Owners Manual.

Therefore, while your vehicle may have had a "defect in the system", that would not necessarily be the case for all Fusion owners.

To help others, what was the outcome when you brought your Fusion to the Dealership for your heated steering wheel control issue? What was replaced/reprogrammed etc.?

Get back to us and good luck.
