Base sound system modification in '10 SE

Im new to the Fusion ownership community. I am looking to slowly do a few things in the new few months, first with the sound system. For being a base system the Fusion has nice system but I am a sound fanatic as everything needs to have premium sound. Has anyone upgraded their system yet? I do not want to uninstall the factory head unit as I want to keep the SYNC and I am not interested in getting the adapter to connect to aftermarket system to keep my SYNC capabilities. I was first interested in getting a powered sub and connecting to some 6*9 in the factory openings. I was not impressed with the Sony system at all as it was not worth the extra 1500$ in the Moon and Tune Pkg due to not including a sub in the system. Plus I did not need the SEL Trim anyway. SE with a little better sound and the SUN 'n SYNC pkg was good enough. What have you guys done to upgrade?

 

To upgrade I was thinking about a Infinity Basslink powered sub and two 6*9 in the openings. If the Basslink was not strong enough to power the 6*9's I would consider getting a 10" and a JBL or Infinity sub to power it all. Any suggestions would be great. I am not looking for a ton of bass, just a decent amount. Probably do not need anything bigger than a 10" sub.

hello fellow fusion owners. I am a new fusion owner myself and looking to swap out the basic speakers for a little upgrade. Nothing like a sub woofer or deep bass. I am looking to slightly upgrade the sound so i dont have to blast it so loud to hear a song. Is there any suggestions on what type of speakers I should getand what are the sizes. I havent found any definitive answers on that yet either

Go to crutchfield.com. You need 5x7/6x8 speakers but it will show you what will fit. Infinity Kappa and Polk Audio are good choices.

I posted in another topic, this is what I did with my FFH with the Sony 12 speakers, I had a local car audio shop install a JL Audio 6 x 100 D amp, Clean sweep CL441dsp and CL-SSI, added a JL audio 10" subwoofer, kept the stock speakers and NAV unit, Sync still works, improved the sound a TON. It cost me about $2000 including install.

hey lurker...I'm looking to do something similar in my car. Where did they mount all that gear in your car. Do you have any pictures?

Here are the pictures of what they did to my vehicle, the Cleansweep devices are in the rear quarter panel where the Sony amp is mounted, the SSI is mounted behind the Sony amp, the amp is mounted under the front passenger seat.

So what is all connected to the JL amp? I want to do similar, keep the factory system and use the amp to power one 10" or 12" and the 6*9 in the back. I am assuiming that your JL amp is powering everything and you disconnected the factory Sony amp. I was not impressed by the Sony system at all so that is why I did not waste 1500 for the Moon and Tune. Just got the SE with SYNC and Moonroof and saved a whole lot more to put the system in myself. And how much was that install for the sub to be flush in the trunk like that? Interesting idea for my sub.

The JL audio amp is powering the Front side door speakers and the rear passenger door speakers, two of the JL audio channels were bridged to power the 10" sub, the Sony rear 6x9 speakers in the rear deck were disconnected, the Sony amp just powers the front and rear center speakers, the JL Audio Sub cost $120, the car audio shop made the enclosure out of fiberglass resin for $75, labor was about $200 to install it.

Your JL Cleansweep and SSI. How valuable are they to your system? I was interested in getting the Cleansweep but I am confused as to why you need the SSI too. But I like a lot of the ideas you have. I am looking into getting a 6 channel JL Audio amp now to power the door and 12" sub I had in my Scion tC but I definetely want to get a custom box to put flush in the corner of the trunk.

The SSI - Signal Summing Interface, is meant to take the OEM signals from the Factory Head unit and obviously Sum them into one signal then send those signals to the DSP, my understanding with the Factory Head unit the OEM signals are filtered too much and degrade the sound. With the Cleansweep SSI unit eliminates the filtering and sends the the signals full range to the DSP, basically yeah it is important without it the DSP would not work well.

With the Cleansweep SSI unit eliminates the filtering and sends the the signals full range to the DSP, basically yeah it is important without it the DSP would not work well.

If the signals are actively filtered from the head unit, the SSI won't eliminate the filtering. There won't be any way to fully eliminate it other than reverse-EQ'ing it to negate the filtering and flatten the signal, which I think the DSP does. However, if the signals are just split (crossed-over) from the head unit to send one signal to the woofers and a different signal to the tweeters, you tap all of those channels and run them into the SSI, which takes them all and sums them into a single full-range signal to feed into the DSP.

 

If the stock head unit sends out a full-range signal to the speakers and they just use passive, in-line capacitors to filter or split the signal, then you could technically just tap the full-range signal before the filters and get the same effect. In both cases, you'll still need the DSP to actually EQ the signal & any other processing, since virtually all head units are doing some sort of EQ'ing.
