Adding a back-up Camera

Recommended Posts

Due to the poor rearward visibility (the car behind you disappears when parallel parking!) I've been thinking of adding a camera like this to my Fusion:

http://www.amazon.com/PLCM36-Universal-Monitor-License-Rearview/dp/B0037WNONS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1302486467&sr=8-1

Anyone have any experience to share?

My plan would be to hide the monitor in the top of the dash cubbie to keep it out of sight.

Any thoughts on routing cables?

While I can back up pretty well (practice in a HMMWV makes these cars seem like they have a giant window in the back) I have been thinking about adding one myself, if you get that one let us know how it is!

I'll post pictures when I'm done, but I got the camera mounted. I cut a tiny hole in the trim piece the holds the licence plate lights, and fished it into the trunk using the hole that would presumably be used for the factory cam, and have the wires following the factory harness from the trunklid. Right now I have temporary wiring in the cab but I hope to continue a discrete job. I'm still trying to figure the best hidden location of the screen. Might end up with the centre console.

Huge improvement in rear visibility!

And it wasn't my imagination, according to this CR test the Fusion is pretty bad. They don't mention if they had the spoiler:

Apparently it got a lot worse with the 2010 so being a little taller than they tested (6'1") and having a 2009 help me a lot. I'm still thinking about the camera

They didn't indicate spoiler/no spoiler either. But having a '11 with a spoiler it's pretty bad.
