Low Fuel Warning Light

Hey all. Just purchased a certified pre-owned 2010 Ford Fusion Sport AWD about 300 miles ago, with about 2500 miles left on the bumper to bumper. Still going through the options with a fine tooth comb to make sure everything works before warranty expires.

Today I was fairly low on gas, with my information display saying '17 MILES UNTIL EMPTY LOW FUEL", however as I was pulling into the gas station, it occurred to me that aside from the informational display, my car didn't have a 'low fuel light' (obnoxiously bright, shaped like a gas pump) that illuminated to let me know I was low. Before I pumped the gas, I cut the ignition and restarted the car, checking to see what illuminated on the dash. No dice. Checking the owners manual suggests I'm supposed to have one, near the gas gauge.

So, I call the dealership. They inform me because I have a Sport with the information display (e.g. 17 MILES UNTIL EMPTY LOW FUEL) my car doesn't come with a low fuel light. I'm just looking for corroboration, as that doesn't seem right. Thanks in advance.

Hi Mike. :D The Dealer and toyz are correct. There is only the Message Center warnings, no low fuel light. On the lighter side, our car tells us the fuel is low and approximately how far we can drive until we run out, do we also need an "obnoxiously bright" warning light? :hysterical: Again, just joking, I understand you are only asking because according to what you read you think there should be one.

Out of curiosity, what printing is your Owners Manual and what page did you see a low fuel warning light mentioned as being near the gas gauge? I checked all four printings of the 2010 Owners Manual (1st thru 4th) and unless I missed something, while the 1st printing does mention a low fuel warning light, that was updated in later printings (2nd thru 4th) and is no longer correct. The only warning lights near the gas gauge are the "wrench light" (Throttle control/transmission:), the "Low Tire Pressure Warning" light and the two cruise control lights (engaged/on). As mentioned in the Owners Manual, the fuel pump icon under the "E" on the gauge is just that, only an icon with an arrow indicating which side the fuel filler is on. If it ever did illuminate on past models, it no longer does.

Anyway, short answer is your car only has the "Low Fuel/Miles to E" warning (begins at 50 miles remaining) in the Message Center.

Hope this information helps.

Good luck. :beerchug:

Thanks to all. My assumption, corroborated by my owners manual didn't jive with the dealer's answer, so was just looking for another opinion. Truthfully, I'd prefer the obnoxious light, along with an obnoxious sound. I'm a rather oblivious person :)

BBF 1st printing: January 2009

Page 17 schematic of dash clearly shows the light. I think its mentioned again later on, but page 17 was what I had latched on to.

I think that's the case for models that have the message center. Mine isn't a Sport, just an SEL, but I have the message center and no light. It dings at me every 10km or so starting at 80km remaining until I fill it. I think a light on the dash would be pretty redundant.

Hi Mike. :D Yes, I thought that might be the case when I saw it mentioned in the 1st printing. Unfortunately, sometimes the information in the Owners Manuals does not keep up with late production changes which can occur after the Manuals are printed. This seems to be one of those cases where the 1st printing contained outdated information which was updated in the 2nd and later printings.

Also, as Mutnat mentioned: Models that have the Message Center get the more comprehensive "Low Fuel/Miles to Empty" readout that kicks in at less than 50 miles to empty, eliminating the "idiot light". But the cluster template remained the same, so while the icon would still be there in past years/models, it would not illuminate. Now, that low fuel light has been eliminated completely and replaced by a cruise control light.

To solve this mystery, what warning light is actually located in that spot (to the left of the "F" on the gas gauge and to the right of the "P" and "R" in the transmission/gear display) in your instrument cluster? According to the later Owners Manual printings, that spot is now occupied by one of the two cruise control indicators (engaged or on). Is that the case on your car? If it is, it would seem the 1st Owners Manual printing was outdated and the mystery would be solved.

Let us know.

For the sake of those who are curious, you can view/download the later OM printings (and other Owner Guides) here: LINK: Ford Owner Guides

Good luck. :beerchug:

I believe that is indeed what is actually located in that spot. It doesn't illuminate when the car starts so the next time I go for a ride I'll engage the cruise control and report back.

Exactly. You should get an audible beep when the Low Fuel message appears and it should beep every 10 minutes. A beep and a message is WAY better than an idiot light.

In my case the light near the F is the one that we see in the owner manual (a low fuel light), but it juste don't illuminate

Hi fontaine_erik. :D Sorry if my earlier explanation was not clear. Unless Canadian vehicles are different, this seems to be the situation: Yours will not light, since the Fusion Sport uses the Message Center to give low fuel warnings. In later production 2010's, that low fuel icon you see was replaced by one of the two cruise control lights, as mentioned earlier in this thread and in later printings of the 2010 Owners Manual.

However, in some early production 2010's (such as yours, it would seem), the low fuel warning light icon is still present by the fuel gauge in the instrument cluster. But it will not illuminate. This is not uncommon in modern vehicles where the same gauges/face plate are used for multiple trim levels (i.e. S, SE, SEL, Sport) that have different standard features, sometimes resulting in non-illuminating icons on some models. It is also not uncommon with audio system face-plates, where a higher-end model will have features enabled that lower-end models do not. So the lower-end model will have icons present that can be seen in certain light/from certain angles even though the feature itself is not enabled and will not illuminate.

Hope this clears up any confusion.

Good luck. :beerchug:
