2012 - Avoid 6F35 Transmission?

Recommended Posts

We are looking to replace my wife's car with a 2012 Fusion. I currently have a 2009 Mercury Mariner myself, and have been through the "fun" of the 6F35 transmission. Let's just say that I don't want to go through it again. Have they resolved the problems with the 6F35 transmission on the 2012 Fusions? Would it be a good idea to avoid it and go with the Sport or Lincoln MKZ (which I'm assuming don't use the 6F35 transmissions)? Or, is it safe to go with the 2.5 or 3.0 Fusion?

Thanks in advance for all responses!

Hi Dragline. :D While some owners have trouble with the 6F35 transmission in their particular car (as with any transmission in any car), the majority of 2.5 and 3.0 Fusions with the 6f35 are trouble free. So which way you go is up to you.

That being said, if you decide to go with the MKZ or Fusion Sport, the 3.5L V-6 engines in those cars use the Aisin transmission.

Let us know what you decide.

Good luck. :beerchug:

Just picked up our 2011 3 weeks ago, was a bit concerned about the 6F35 due to some of the reviews, only have 650 miles so far but the transmission has not made one irratic shift and seems very smooth, cant hardly tell when it shifts unless am watching the tach.

Early 2010 models had problems with the 6F35, supposedly fixed with a flash, however I haven't heard any problems from 2011 or 2012 owners (2010.5 and newer has hardware changes, not just software to address the issue).

EDIT: It's still there. Some 2012 owners are reporting it. I'd say not as common, but still present

Hi, I have a 2012 fusion se 4cyl with 1300 miles and other than the consistent 2-3rd gear flare I love the car. Right now its more of an annoyance but later down the road it could mean big repairs...Symtom occurs cold or hot. I do not have any of the other issues so many people are having however it does have a tendacy to upshift and downshift too soon in my opinion and yes the 1-2nd shift can be firm but is tolerable-(no banging/slamming into gear).. I took it in Jan and they said a software update is due in July? So I have to wait 6+ months while the transmission prematurely wears from the flares? I cant believe ford hasn't nailed this problem down yet...If this flash does not fix problem I'm getting rid of car before something much more serious happens.

Personally, I'm going with a used 2010 Sport with the aisin transmission.

There are too many stories including my friend with an 09 Escape who had to have the 6F35 transmission replaced.

Wanted the 3.0, but that also has the 6F35.

With the Sport, I lose a little milage and pay a few more dollars for one, but piece of mind with the transmission, priceless!!!

My 2010 had the flash, and then the trans ended up getting replaced anyway because it was never right after that. It is going back as as buy back, as per the FSE, and the Ford Rep for my area. Have a coupon for new ford vehicle too ($2,000)

Anyway, to avoid the POS trans, get a Sport or an MKZ. The TF-80 is FAR SUPERIOR to the 6F35 Any day of the week.

Guess what I ordered? A Sport AWD. So long 6F35, it has not been fun.

And for the record, there are still cases of the 6F35 causing issues in 2012 models as well. Updates or not...... the 6F35 is not on my list.

Usually when something is being reviewed, people will always post about the negative things and no one will usually post about their good experience. i.e. for every negative review posted about the transmission, there are likely 10 people that have no problems and will never post about it. Just my 2 cents :P And for the record, I haven't had any problems 3000 KMs in.

As somebody with a failed 6F35 in the shop right now...agreed. Happy customers do not complain, and only very happy customers even review, so most comments will be negative, regardless of the product.

I recommend anyone carefully weigh the complaints in making your decision about the Fusion...but do not make it your only factor in turning down a Fusion. While a handful of 2011 and 2012 cars with 6F35 transmissions have issues, most of the 6F35 issues appear related to the revision A and B valve bodies in the 2010MY Fusions and 2009-2010MY Escapes. I do suspect more 2011-2012MY cars have exhibit some symptoms but will never fail, based on talking with some fleet operator employees, but the percentage is still very low. The vast majority of cars appear unimpacted at this time.

Today, if the call was between a 3.0 SEL or a Sport...I'd take the Sport to have the Aisin transmission, for the peace of mind, considering the mild difference in MPG is more than made up for by having that sweet Cyclone under the hood. But, I think you'll be thrilled with your new car! The only reason I put up with the crud I've been through is because the rest of the car is EXACTLY what I wanted. Just chill, take it for a good long test drive, and keep an eye on it. I still bought my car knowing about then 6F35 issues, and I'd probably still buy it today after all this.

I'm sweatin' here. I'm suppose to go get my V6 SEL tomorrow night and now reading about the 6f35 trans I'm not sure what to do. I haven't paid for it yet.........

As someone who has a 2010 SEL and had 6F35 issues (rebuilt and new valve body), I would not get another 6F35 car. Not worth the worry. I'm not convinced the 6F35 isn't going to implode beyond the warranty period. Transmission still isn't really right.

If you look at how many Sport owners (Aisin transmission) have had issues, there are practically none. The previously used Japanese transmissions are what really helped make the Fusion a very reliable car (at least through 2009). Ford should have continued using the Aisin.

If you do get the SEL, get a Ford ESP plan.

In terms of myself, I cant say too many good things about the 6F35 I had in my 2010 SEL. Flashed multiple times, and eventually they replaced the transmission in the car, but it NEVER shifted quite right, when it was cold... FORGET IT!!! It shifted like S**T!!!!

To make a long story short, the car was still in the 3/36 BTB warranty, the FSE and Area Rep talked to the dealership and myself...... They bought my car back, gave me a "A Plan" price, Threw in a credit, and with the incentives, I got a 2012 Sport AWD.

I love my TF-80 Trans.... compared to the 6F35, NIGHT AND DAY!!!

I will say this, most of the 6F35 cars are problem free.... Mine was not.

My 2 Cents.

My 2011 sel at over 12k, still shifts fine, no problems. As for my self, I would not worry about the 6f35 as I am sure if one was to talk to the many people driving fusions and escapes with this tranny, most would tell you the same thing that they have no problems.

Looks like the '13 has the 6F tranny in all but the Hybrid. I went to the Malibu site which uses the same tranny and no issues. Google 6F35 problems and numerous Ford threads and links pop up, I did not see any GM and this tranny is jointly developed by GM/Ford. Odd

Ford and GM jointly designed the 6F50/55 and 6T70/75 but they are apparently not part-for-part identical mechanically and use OEM specific PCM and software. The 6F35 is supposedly a neck-down (in ammunition parlance) of the 6F50...they also aren't identical, and it was developed by Ford subsequent to the 6F50.

There are complaints, albeit much more limited, with the 6F50. Some are valve body issues similar to the 6F35.

There are also complaints about the 6T70/75 series from GM, as Google can confirm.

The problems certainly are not as common...but again, it isn't the "same" transmission. The 6F35 was designed later. Presumably to be cheaper, smaller, and lighter, for use with lower-spec engines. Comparing McIntosh to Granny Smith. ;)

More like a handful. Still not like the 6F35, but not flawless, either.

Multiple broken wave plate converter issues:

And repair suppliers suggest TC issues:

What IS interesting is that the issues are dissimilar from 6F50/55 and 6F35 issues I've read about.

There are also the ubiquitous programming complaints...pretty much every electronically controlled auto or "semi-auto" has those...
