2012-Steering wheel crooked when going straight--UPDATE 8-2-2011

Recommended Posts

The steering when on my new 2012 Fusion S is cocked to the left several degrees when going straight and it is driving me crazy It has 250 miles on it and it did not seem to be like this when I bought it last week when it had six miles on her. I have not hit any pot holes or anything like that. Anyone had this problem. It does not seem to be out of alignment because it goes perfectly straight down the road. Should I have the dealer realign the front end or just have the steering wheel reset to dead center.

Took my Fusion to the dealer today. The alignment was perfect. Was told there was nothing they could do to straighten the steering wheel because it is in tolerance. I drove another brand new 2012 Fusion...same thing as mine. Steering wheel is cocked to the left and if you put the wheel at dead center, it pulls to the right. Is this because of the electronic power steering?

Let the dealer figure out how to correct it. Could be either or both.

You know, every vehicle I've ever had exhibited a slight left bias to the steering wheel. Since I'm typically a left-hand driver on long trips (the other hand has worse carpal tunnel), I actually prefer the slight bias because it makes steering with that hand easier. However, I can totally understand how irritating it must be for everybody else. ;) Hopefully, they fixed it to your satisfaction!

I have the same thing on my 2012. The steering wheel is a couple of degrees to the left while driving straight....but only on a road surface that's curved slightly down hill to the right for rain runoff. On the rare instance when the road surface curves in the opposite direction, the wheel is a couple of degrees to the right while driving straight. Only when the road surface is totally flat will the steering wheel be dead center. I've seen this on some other front wheel drive cars, so I thought it was normal.

Yup, it's normal. Check your tire pressures (cold in the shade) with an accurate gauge to make sure they aren't causing problems. If my tires are 1-2 psi low I can feel the steering getting sluggish already.

They actually design an extra 0.5° of caster into the right side to deal with the crown of the road. If your road is more than barely sloped, the wheel will not be perfectly straight. To test, go drive on a freeway or interstate with a grass median, and check the wheel position in the left vs. right lanes. You will probably have to hold the wheel to the right in the left lane. If it's safe to do so, you might also straddle the line and drive in the exact middle of the road. The wheel should be pretty much straight. Your alignment is perfect so no need to worry. I think Ford's steering is just a little more touchy than other manufacturers, which is actually a good thing in my opinion. Other cars are more "center bound" at the expense of being harder to steer into turns.
