selrahc22
I just recently got a Ford Fusion Sport about a month ago and I've been getting 19.5 mpgs city and when I drive about 40 miles non stop i get 19.9 on it. Is this normal? Does the engine have to break in. I live in a high elevation area and normal unleaded here is 86 octane. Would changing gas improve mpgs? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks
FusionDiffusion
Yes, it is somewhat normal for a new Sport. Give it 3000 or more miles to break it in depending on how aggressively you drive it. If you're going up and down hills ~20 mpg would be expected in your case. Otherwise I would expect 23 or better on a flat road. You reset the MPG meter before the non-stop part right? BTW, here's a whole thread about this: http://www.fordfusio...s-fuel-economy/ You can try my tips at the end. As for the fuel, you probably know 87 octane is recommended. You must live in western Texas to have 86. You should be okay on 86 if you stay above 3000 MSL. You can try "mid grade" and see if you get an improvement. However, if you are driving to lower elevations (East texas) you really should fill up with mid grade before you go down. I highly recommend using name brand high quality gasoline (Top Tier or equivalent). My mileage did get a little better as the car was broken in a few thousand miles. You can expect maybe a 10-20% improvement. The rest is up to the driver's foot (see my tips).

Thanks Yeah as FusionDiffusion mentioned there is a whole thread on this topic already. Long story short, average MPG for this model is only about 21. So don't expect too great of an improvement. Oh and congratulations on your new car! You should post a intro in the Welcome forum with a photo of your new ride.

Thanks when you go to do the 40 miles non stop, reset the guage. bet it shows better than 19.9 it averages the fuel economy until it is reset. so its averaging your 40 miles into your city driving miles.

Thanks Don't complain too much about the mileage or you will get tons of replies saying "dude, you bought the sport model why are you worried about gas mileage"? After mine was broken in I averaged it out to be about 20.5 overall. The highest I've seen is just under 25 on a trip from vegas to san diego, and the lowest is 19. Fuel economy is not this car's strong point.
akirby
Edge 3.7L FWD EPA 18 city, 25 hwy, 20 combined. Sounds about right to me.
Fusionpursuit
My commute avg mpg every week is 24.9 to 25.5 (25mph roads for about 100 miles and 150 miles of 55/65mph hwy portion + traffic) I reset when I fill tank on my day off. When I did one non-stop traffic free hwy trip at 65-70mph, I reset my computer from the time I got on the hwy ramp, I was able to reach 30.1 from my previous record at 29.9 (was at 2.5K on ODO) This was a 30 mile flat stretch, I am hoping I get a chance to do a longer flat stretch trip to see how I can push it further, but I keep getting interrupted by having to take a planned exit or run into some traffic areas, when the mpg computer is still increasing. I have about 7K miles on my car now and use 87 octane.

ShuckyD
I have an 80 mile daily commute with 90% of it being on highway (~70mph). If I use cruise control and set it in the 68ish range and am not constantly overriding it to get in front of people then I can get a good 24-25mpg, but if I decide to be "slick" and hit it or use the select shifter then I may end up with around 21-22mpg. I usually get about 380 miles to a tank and am not overly thrilled with it, but it sure beats the 17-18mpg I was getting with my Ford Ranger
skippytx
I have a pretty heavy commute (170 miles a day) and @ 80MPH I see about 26 to 26.5 MPG on the highway. In general I see 19 when driving pure city, 25 to 26 highway and about 22.5 mixed per tank of gas. The onboard trip computer/MPG estimator seems to consistently run about 1MPG higher than actual MPG. The best I've ever seen in my car is 70MPH with no AC and saw about 29MPG on that trip. In South Texas the A/C is almost alway on though. Overall not bad mileage for what the car is, but I'm finding it pretty hard not to look at the new Hyundai Sonata and it's 2.0T engine that gets up into the 30's on the highway while still putting out about the same amount of power as our engine does. I did notice once the car was broken in the mileage went up a bit. Around the 2 or 3,000 mile mark.
Jim Rockford
Mine has 92k on it and I drive prolly 90% highway at 74mpg and get about 26.5-27 if I baby it....its pretty constant.
toyz
I have found that the mileage you get on the Sport is very dependent upon tire pressure and, to a lesser extent, the type of gas you use. I use regular from Shell or Costco. I have found that the Costco gas in Las Vegas gives me better mileage than the gas in Phoenix (which is "reformulated" to lower smog). My daily commute is 38 miles each way, a combination of highway and snails pace, and I reliably get 25-26mpg. On my regular trip from Phoenix to Las Vegas I average 27-28 mpg and on the return trip 28-29 mpg. I have about 55K miles on my 2010 Sport FWD and check my tire pressure every two weeks. A bonus is that my OEM tires are only about 2/3 worn. I set them at 35psi cold.
Jim Rockford
Yea We have this 10 percent ethonol crap they pass off as gas and that lead to a 2-5 mpg lower figure... I figure I could get 30 with real gas.

fusion0389
I bought a 2012 Sport AWD in april and the gas mileage has increased since I first bought it. I got 27.5mpg on my last 400 mile trip, imo thats prety darn good for an AWD Sport car.
Cobraman302
Normal driving I get 22.5-23mpg with a 60hwy/40cty driving week. All highway I have gotten as high as 27.5 several times. 2010 Sport FWD all stock performance wise. 40k miles.
Cory Windham
Aight! Hold it, wait till you got 66K on your Sport! I'm getting steady 38 mpg hwy and straight up 22 in the city. Sticking with the Castrol GTX Semi-Synth and not doggin' it. I like to relax in this car, plus bumps help to create noises and creaks in the cabin! One of my favorites in the long run though, I stopped with the dealer and followed my own maintenance schedule of 3 washes a week, clean the car all the time, pop the hood and check tires every week. Automatic tire pressure failed on me, although I like this ride, and I keep my eye on it! FIRST POST!!
Fusionpursuit
I am at 35K miles and my last two commutes, my fill up (I do not top off) is now up from 420 to 430 miles to empty.

I don't think there is any way you can realistically get 38 mph out of a Sport. You might be able to get the MPG to display 38 going down a hill or something, but no way you are going to get much over 30 without significant aero mods.
BlackBetty
That sound about right. My best highway mileage was around 25 averaging 60-100mph My worst city was 15mpg with lots of warm up time bc the temps were down to -40. My average is 19.2 ownin the car. That's mostly city driving with a heavy foot and AWD. https://www.fuelly.com/dashboard/ Edited February 13, 2014 by BlackBetty
indifferent
I am currently at 20.4 but this winter has plummeted my gas mileage with bad traffic and warming it up. I would say in the summer i am around 21.5 70% city... Drove from metro detroit to nashville and back got around 29.

Little update, I live in Cincinnati, my driving habits and patterns have not changed, and my winter MPG's on my FWD Sport are at about 21-21.3 average, that's down about 2 mpg from summer. That's to be expected.
jb124
I only get around 15 mpg but I rarely drive more than 4 miles at a time (2010 with less than 12k miles). When I do get it out on the open road, it gets up to around 30 mpg.
teport
I must be doing something right. My average it typically around 25.5. If I only use it to commute to work, 15 mins on freeway, 5 on city streets, then I get an average of 26.5MPG. I did notice an increase when I did a res delete on the intake, hopefully I will get a Steeda intake here soon, and I only fill up at chevron now. changing each one of those I saw and 1-2 MPG increase. I am also not a cruise control kind of guy and I love to get up to speed fast. I have also started to put the system cleaners in my gas every two or three times, I haven't noticed a difference yet so i may cut back on that.
