Air Bag warning light

Recommended Posts

My 2012 Fusion SEL has just over 10,000 miles on it and I have recently had it in the dealer twice for air bag warning light issues. First time they said they fixed it, I got it back and the light was off but it came back on the next day.

They have it right now and gave me a loaner to drive while they try to figure out what the light means and why it is on.

Anyone else have this problem? The car runs fine, it is still really new and I have had no problems with it except this airbag warning light that comes on.

At first it would come on and go out a few times. Then when it started to stay on all the time I took it to the dealer the first time. They got it to go out but then it came back on the next day in the afternoon when I was leaving work. Same thing again, it would come on and then when I shut the car off it did not come on right away but then I would notice it was on after driving for awhile and then eventually it got back to the point where it was always on and I took it back to the dealer again.

No, I have not had any problems with the car not starting, this is the only problem I have had with the car so far. Maybe it could be the battery but like I said, the car is new, I have had it for 10 months now and batteries usually last longer than that unless it is just a bad battery.

My guess is that it's a bad connection in the wiring somewhere, either in a harness or a ground. They probably read the code, gave a cursory look at the circuit the code identified, cleared the codes and hoped for the best. But the system will tell the dealer what the problem is, they just have to fix it correctly.

I think there is definitely a bad connection somewhere and that's what is triggering the light when the battery is weak - the connection isn't allowing full current so a slight drop and it registers an open circuit. And it's a common problem so it must be in the engineering or the manufacturing of the connectors.

They called me today and told me to come get the car, the light was on when I drove it into the shop and they saw that it was on. But they could not get it to come on for them there. The printout says they "performed a pinpoint test and found bad pin fit in connector. Sprayed deoxidezer in connector and fix monor faulty connection."

I will see if it comes back on in the next few days, if it does I will take it back again. I bought a car that has airbags in it and I want them to work in the event of a accident. I should not be having these problems with a car that is so new.

I like the car, over the past few months I have drove 4 different rentals and each time I get back into my Fusion I can feel the difference, it is a very nice riding car, and I love the style of it but if I wanted problems from a car I would have bought a used one.

This sounds like a problem that is fairly common on some years of Ford Rangers. I have a 2002 Ranger that had this problem before the warranty expired. There is a connector under each bucket seat that is related to the seat belt tensioners. When the vehicle is started the computer runs a check on them along with many other things. If the resistance is out of spec it finds it faulty and flashes the airbag light in a specific sequence giving a code indicating where the problem is. After flashing this code a few times it goes on full time until the next start.

The dealer replaced something in there and the problem went away for about a year and the light came on again. I found I could just disconnect the connector under the passenger seat, spray some anti-corrosion fluid in there and it would be good for another year or so. About a year and a half ago the light came on and would not go out no mater what I did to the connector. I eventually discovered a broken wire that went into the connector. I solder repaired that and have not had a problem since. I suspect that wire connection may have been faulty all along and was a major contributing factor in the resistance being out of spec. I guess time will tell.

I imagine your problem is in a different place but is probably related in that a connector is the culprit. Let's hope the dealer repair is a permanent one. If not a replacement of that connector and what ever goes with it may be needed.
