fordktpjoe
Well yesterday the wife goes in to get the oil changed. (Valvoline Instant Oil Change) the mechanic walks around, shows her the trans dipstick, and says "Oh my GOD! LOOK! you need a trans service SO BAD! this fluid is the worst I have ever seen!" The wife looks at the fluid, and says it looks brown. calls me. I told her just tell them no and go home. Car has 50,000 miles on it, it may be due a change, but there's NO WAY it can be brown already. So I get home, and pull the stick. Guess what? it's brown. So I had her call them back to see if they change the filter with their trans. service? "No, we 'backflush' it, so it cleans the filter" I told her to call the dealer and schedule an appointment. She calls the dealer, and THEY tell her it isn't due a fluid change until 150,000 miles! WHAT??? She explained what color the fluid was, they said it was OK, 150,000 was the recommended interval, it would be OK. I told her drive it. If it burns up before 150k, we'll burn Ford. Oh forgot to mention '06 4 cyl. auto.

Under severe service conditions the recommendation is 30,000 miles. A friend and former Ford tranny engineer always changes his at 30K. Most people I know do 30K or 60K. The fluid should be changed by the dealer using a machine and the cooler lines which will replace 95% of the old fluid. You don't need to change the filter - if it's clogged then the tranny is toast already.

TurboGTU
Mine is also brown. 06 fusion I4. I think I'm going in for a compleate service. This is the first tranny I had that the oil turned brown quick. I partly blame it on the wide gear spacing between 1st and 2nd and the soft shifting programmed into the tranny (like slipping the clutch on a manual). I just hope the fusion has better solenoids than that of the crappy Jaguars and VW had on thier JF506e. Think this is the same tranny. All those trannys toast the clutches when the solenoids go bad. Not to mention a craking apply piston. The bad thing about dirty or burnt oil is that it has junk in it that the trans filters cannot filter out. I've taken apart trannies before and the filter can only trap large particles. The valve bodies and solenids get cloged up with friction meterial (asbestos) and junk making them shift real bad. Hence the development of the tranny FLUSH machines. Ford telling us to change it way latter smells like truble up ahead. Sorry...I guess Im just ranting. Being a previous Ford Taurus owner and all. Thougt maybe this trans was better since ford didn't make it!
ctrcbob
Turbo, I know they have been talking about the 4 cylinder Fusion and I have no idea who makes the automatic transmission for the 4 cylinder, but when it comes to the 6 cylinder Fusion, and I could be wrong about this, but I don't think that Jaguar or VW use the Asian-Warner, like the AWF-21 our cars use. Everyone else, When they talk about a "backflush", I think they are talking about the machine that hooks up to the transmission lines, and changes out the fluid, while the engine is at idle. If this is the method they use, they are not backflushing. What is happening is that the new fluid gets pumped into the transmission by the transmissions own pump, while the old dirty fluid gets pumped out. This is not a backflush. If anything, it is a "forward-flush" and I've use it a few times on previous cars without any problems whatsoever. Also, as for the color of the old "dirty" fluid, a few years ago, I had a Chrysler convertable that took ATF+4. The owners manual stated that you are not to worry about the fluid looking dirty. It is a normal thing and that d. (Did not keep that car for very long because living in Florida, you just can't have the top down in the summer as it is so darn HOT and HUMID, although in the winter it was great).
akirby
The transmissions are made by Aisin.
LMSMTech
Be very careful of servicing these transmissions at a fast luber. The newer transmissions require different fluid, this is why it looks discolored. Outside shops do not have different machines to perform this so called flush and the fluid could be contaminated and cause internal damage. Go to the dealer and have them explain. It may only be a drain and fill procedure , and be cheaper. 150 k is alot,I recomend 60k.Besides this peticular trans has a built in screen. The trans must be dismantled to be changed.

Oh forgot to mention '06 4 cyl. auto. Please , listen to akirby. Transmission fluid $4.00/ quart. New transmission $4,000.00. Peace of mind... PRICELESS! Personally, I change the trans fluid and filter on a NEW car at 15,000mi to get rid of all the metal shavings that accumulate due to gears polishing their mating surfaces and then fluid and filter at 30,000 mi and then fluid and filter every 30,000 mi thereafter. Make sure you have them use one of those machines that push the old fluid out of the torque converter AND the gearbox. Otherwise you are wasting your $

If there's enough stuff to clog it then it's already toast. No need to even drop the pan.
