viggen
Driving along in the Sport yesterday, and without warning, the car goes into limp mode. Wrench light and check engine light comes on. Pull off to the side of the road, turn off the car and restart. Car heads off normally, however, a mile later, same thing occurs. I have it towed to the dealer. I automatically think it's the TB based on the recall for the other models, and the well-known problems that these things have, although the 3.5 was never covered. Turns out, it is a defective throttle pedal, and not the TB. The service rep has never seen this in the fusion. Anyone ever heard of these things failing? Apparently it will be a few days before this part comes in.
indifferent
That is crazy! What exactly went bad?
akirby
First time I've heard of it period.
drolds1
There's a sensor connected to the pedal. I guess that's what failed. Not common but it's electronic so...
BlueOval2010
My Sport had the same symptoms a while back. I removed the TB and cleaned it with TB cleaner. No other problems in over a year. Except now that I said that; it will probably explode next time I start it.
viggen
As drolds said...the rep said the sensor failed. How much different are the TBs in the sport vs. the 2.5 and 3.0? I have to imagine that they are slightly bigger, and therefore a completely different part, but are they also prone to failure?

Two different sensors. Example:
indifferent
Is this simple a plug and play sensor? Something one could do on there own?
akirby
The part probably is, but there may be a calibration procedure that requires a Ford IDS.
Waldo
The shop manual doesn't mention any calibration procedure, but it looks like you have to change the entire pedal. So it's probably "pre-calibrated" and you just replace the whole thing. It's just two nuts and an electrical connector.
viggen
Well, got the car back Wednesday night, just today, car goes into limp mode once again. Towed back. Won't get at it until Tuesday morning. Not happy
viggen
Oh, no check engine this time, only wrench
indifferent
I would clean the throttle body for good measure
viggen
Got some news today: looks like it's a failed tb. The sensor was working intermittently, hence they figured the pedal was the culprit originally. Now it appears stuck this time around. Luckily I had the opportunity to talk with the service manager, and he's taking care of the new unit and labor, saving me $$$$.
indifferent
That's huge... A dealer quoted me over $6bills. It's a 20 min job tops.
viggen
P2112 code thrown for this latest dealer stop (i don't have the codes from the 1st stop) Here's my question though: have these 3.5 TBs been upgraded over the old, factory ones?
indifferent
According to ford the TB on the 3.5 don;t have any known issues. So not really sure why they would upgrade them. that being said i haven't heard of too many ppl having issues with the replacements.

I had the TB replaced on my 2010 MKZ per TSB 10-21-6.

viggen
Wow. Going back in tomorrow again. Went limp, threw the wrench light. I was able to restart and get home without it doing it again. Luckily i was local. I have lost complete faith in this car and am looking for answers. Maybe a short? Bad wire harness? Ecu?
viggen
3rd time's a charm: electrical arc on one of the wires. Replaced the harness going into the TB. All good. Finally
