olsj87
Hello, I have a 2010 Fusion SE that had a parking brake stuck. It was somewhat difficult to release the parking brake. It wasn't a big deal until one day it wouldn't release. I did not drive with the parking brake on/applied...lol. But I tried my best to push the release button in to lower the brake. It would work so i took a some plyers and pulled the button as gently as I could and it released but now the parking brake will not apply any longer. I can lift the handle into position and it works but it will not stay in position. It appears that by pulling the release button something inside the parking brake handle broke or come loose. Has anyone experienced this or now the best way to fix? I called the dealership and they said they would need to remove the center console and etc. to see what happened. I just would like to see if anyone know if this could be a self fix or involve an auto shop. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance. FusionDiffusion
Not sure if you know this, but if the parking brake is stuck pull up on the handle slightly while pressing in the button to make it release easier. Yes, it sounds like you broke the ratcheting mechanism. And yes, to get to it you have to remove parts of the center console. If you buy a new parking brake mechanism I think you could probably do it yourself unless you've never worked on cars before.
olsj87
I appreciate your reply. I did try that first. The problem with mine was the button wasn't releasing all the way period. Some times knocking it with your hand would loosing the button to release then when you tried again it would work. This time it was stuck. So, I had to leave but unfortunately my poor fusion had to suffer. I will look into the parking brake mechanism to see what parts I need. Thanks for the tip again.
olsj87
Update: Spoke with the dealership and they said the entire Parking Lever "Controller" would have to be replaced. Not too bad for the price. I've looked at the part number for my model which is AE5Z2780BB is about $60 for the part. I will pull the center console off and see how everything looks. Has anyone else had any experience with this and willing to share their war stories? Thanks, Otis
thefoeyouknow
Unless you've got a manual trans, why are you using it?

thefoeyouknow
I don't know what it's like where YOU are, but in Michigan, we know that the only reason to use a parking brake is if the tow truck drivers are pretty. Around here parking brakes are more trouble than they're worth.
olsj87
Lol! I see. Many folks around here use them all the time. It's recommended in some cases, poor man's theft protection.

Around here parking brakes are more trouble than they're worth. They're called parking brakes because they're supposed to be used when you park - otherwise you put pressure on the parking pawl in the transmission unnecessarily.
thefoeyouknow
Parking pawls are big and strong, they can take it. Parking brakes, on the other hand, are prone in at least half a dozen ways to bind, seize, stick, break, hang, or otherwise malfunction for any number of reasons. I don't trust them.

I once had to go rescue a female neighbor of mine who parked on a hill and didn't apply the parking brake before shifting into park. The car rolled backward enough to bind up the parking pawl and she wasn't strong enough to muscle it out of Park.
akirby
I know at least 2 cases where the parking pawl broke and the car rolled down the street. There are ways to prevent the parking brake from becoming stuck in cold weather. Saying you shoudn't use it is silly.
olsj87
All, I found the part and ordered yesterday and installed it today. All is good. For the 2010 Fusion SE 1. Remove the center console. 2. Detach the brake cable. (unscrew the nut) 3. Detach the parking brake sensor. 4. Remove the single bolt and 2 nuts to remove the parking brake lever. 5. Go to fordparts.com or call dealership and look for your model vehicle part number and order. 6. Install new parking brake lever. 7. Install bolt and nuts. 8. Reattach the sensor. 9. Reattach the brake cable. 10. Reinstall the center console. 11. Done. It was super easy. Edited April 27, 2013 by olsj87
FusionDiffusion
Make sure you check the cable tension as well so you don't have dragging brakes. With the brake on 1-2 clicks there should barely be any drag on the rear wheels, and by five clicks you shouldn't be able to turn either rear wheel by hand.
