montematt
So ive had my fusion for a little under a month. Ive noticed that when i drive over 60 the steering wheel shakes. Its not a large shake, but i can visibily see it in the wheel. when i turn right i can feel it intesifiy, (enough to feel it in the seat). I believe it is a bad drivers side tire, especially since on certain roads it almost dissapears. The odd thing i noticed this morning coming in to work is that when i turn hard to the right and let the car right it self (like coming out of a sharp turn) it shakes as well. the shaking at this speed is much slower (but then so is the car). once the steering rights it goes away. Im wondering if the issues are related or if i might have some other sort of issue like a ball joint or a failing axle. Oh and my car could use an alignment, it does pull to the left a bit. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
akirby
The only thought is to get it back to the dealer asap. That could be something loose in the suspension or steering. One way to quickly see if it's the tire is to rotate the tires front to back. Otherwise just get it to the dealer.
montematt
My fusion is used, 2006 and the warrenty doesnt cover the tires, which is what im sure they are going to blame. the suspinsion feels fine, handles great drives good. it feels like the tire is bad, its just the wierd i guess pulse is a better word when the car is straghtening out after a turn, ( can see the steering wheel move back to center in a semi jerking motion). Im going to go by a tire shop and get them to check the front tire, if its good im taking it to the dealer.
akirby
Sorry I thought it was a new one. If it's doing what you say it's doing then the suspension isn't "fine" necessarily. I would still swap the tires front and rear and if it goes away then you know it's one of the rear tires.
BlueOval2010
Akirby has the smart advice. Mine was doing the same thing awhile back, so I moved the front tires to the rear and the problem went away. Unfortunately, that moved the tires with the most wear to the front. When I put the new tires on, they found that the offending wheel had throw a weight, so that probably explained the wobble. They're adhesive backed weights, and they stick them inside the wheel. Good luck!
montematt
I checked my air pressure yesterday, and i was at 42 psi in the two front tires. (i havent checked it since i bought the car). I let some of the air out and it significantly reduced the shaking. (this leads me to believe it is the wheel), this weekend im going to swap the tires. One last question, is it normal (with a bad alignment) for the car to pull a bit in one direction under hard acceleration in 1st gear? I think im going to take it back to the dealer this week and complain about some minor things and see if i can get them fixed.
BlueOval2010
That sounds like torque steer to me, and it's normal in most front wheel drive vehicles. Different makes and models exhibit different amounts. When I accelerate hard from a dead stop, it's more like a torque lane change.
