Thedon1012
Hey everyone, I am new to this forum stuff but I figured I'd message you all and see what you know... My 2013 Ford Fusion 1.6L ecoboost is making a ticking/knocking noise at idle. You can really hear it while at a complete stop and in gear. In park you hear it as well but not as loud.. SAYING THAT, the noise is easily heard more inside of the vehicle than outside. I made a video and posted on YouTube for you all to see... any ideas??? Any help is appreciated. WATCH THE VIDEO!!
akirby
I started to post that the ticking is completely normal. It's a characteristic of almost all direct injection engines. But that's much more of a knock than a tick and that isn't normal. Almost sounds like an exhaust leak. Check the exhaust under the vehicle. Do you smell exhaust fumes?
Thedon1012
Hey thanks for replying. No exhaust fumes or anything.. I haven't checked the exhaust yet. Seems to be fine. It's done it since I bought it a couple years ago. For some reason I think it may have gotten a bit louder but I'm not sure. You can't hear the noise outside of the car. Just inside when the car is in gear. In park you can't hear it.
Thedon1012
Sorry I should say in park you can't hear it as loud...
WWWPerfA_ZN0W
How many miles on your Fusion? Have you opened the hood and taken a look? there are usually two removable items used to muffle the sound: an appearance cover, and a HPFP cover. But the sound could be anything. Exhaust, as akirby said, is a good possibility. Is your Fusion AWD by any chance? Are the motor/trans mounts in good shape?
Thedon1012
Like I said I haven't taken a look. Poppin the hood and listening I don't hear anything unusual or disturbing... it's got 99,000KM's on it. So like 60,000 Miles. And nope it's 1.6l FWD. I haven't checked any of the mounts. How can I check those?
WWWPerfA_ZN0W
One way to check the mounts is with engine movement. You would have someone quickly rev the engine in Park/Neutral (no more than 2000 rpm, do not hold), while you watched for engine movement with the hood propped open. If you see a small amount of movement (typically 1/4" or less), that is normal. More than that, the mounts are not at their best. When completely shot, the engine can move up & down 1" or more (!). Transmission mount, same principle, but now you will check from underneath the car, looking towards the engine bay while the engine is revved.
nForrest
Sounds like a loose exhaust mount to me. Exhaust pipe bumping against the floor deck. I belive there is a mount jus aft of the fire wall /center line and one just under the rear seat floor board. Place your hand on the front floorboard and see if you can feel a knock. Do the same on the rear floorboard. Just an idea.
Pavel 131313
can I ask you what you did for noise? what was the boot. I have the same problem for the answer
Nicci0110
Mine is doing this too and the dealer has no answer. They said its just making a noise. They say they have compared it to other cars and they make it to so its just something I will have to live with they said. Well, I am not willing to live with it. It didn't make that noise when I purchased it and with it being under warranty it shouldn't make it now. They have checked the fly wheel and replaced my compressor because my air also went out. They also had to replace a gasket because I had an oil leak which they said I didn't have but my husband was able to show them that and they had to eat their words and fix it. They are expecting me to pick my car up and just deal with it. THe noise this one is making is the exact same as mine and my husband just told me mine is also the 1.6. Does anyone have any suggestions?

FusionDiffusion
You need to look under the hood while it is doing it in drive. If you don't have a helper, put the parking brake on securely, chock the wheels, put it in drive, and get out after you're sure it's not going to roll. Then look under the hood. I bet you will notice the engine hopping up and down or trying to roll and bouncing off the firewall. Take a video of the motion. See if you can figure out where the noise is coming from. My guess is bad motor mount.

Nicci0110
So my husband being a mechanic also thought motor mounts but that wasn't the issue. I picked my car up last night. The dealer manager even agreed that the service manager was ridiculous for calling this a normal noise he offered to pay my car note and any expenses at a new dealer which I am taking it to this week. In addition to my air going out they relaxed my compressor and called it fixed but it isn't fixed at all. So they have now lied about repairing an oil leak that they didn't find till my husband pulled the cover and showed them the oil all over the motor and now my air they said was fixed isn't either. My car sounds exactly like this persons post. Any stress put on the motor cause the noise to be worse. My car also seems sputtery too if that makes since at idle it jumps occasionally.
Nicci0110
My husband has checked under the hood while the car is running and in drive and the noise isn't heard under the hood. Since they "worked on my air" the blendor is also cracking and popping now too
Nicci0110
Thanks you everyone and any suggestion is a great help! I'm open to anything. The new dealer I'm going to I have a friend who is an mechanic there so I feel a little better that I can trust them actually doing the work. If I find they also didn't repair the door latch recall they said they did I will be reaching out to ford corporate about their certification being removed for lying about that repair

Nicci0110
its crazy to me that the blender was fine and now it's broken. I have also reached out to my attorney over this dealer. They think that because I'm there for repairs we don't know anything about cars but like I said I'm not the average customer my husband and 2 friends work at ford and are stumped but this dealer thinks they can say anything to shut me up lol
