How do you remove it?

Does anyone know how to remove the coin tray (drawer) on the left side of the Instrument panel? I am considering putting a Homelink transmitter in the drawer, but can't find a release tab, etc. to pull it out. If you need to pull the IP to get to it, I'll reconsider the mounting location. The unit I have came from an overhead console (Mountaineer) and putting it in the visor is not an option. The drawer is just about the right size. :headspin:

Well the service manual does not mention it anywhere. I have an exploded view of the entire instrument panel and they only show that tray as closed. I also looked in the owners manual but they didn't talk about it there either. Usually there is a tab that you pull down to release it, but I'm assuming you've checked for that.

There's a removable panel directly off to the left hand side of it. There would be a better chance of something being behind there, than under the dash. I also need to remove that tray (I'll be housing remote radar detector electronics there) so when I get my new car I'll be able to answer your question better, but I'm guessing that won't be for around another month now. I may be going to the dealer next week so if I don't forget then I'll also take a look at it then. How big is the Homelink system? A picture would be good. Would it fit in the sunglass compartment in the roof? BTW when I spoke to a Ford service manager he said that you need more than just the electronics to get the Homelink system to work. He said something about a different windshield, which is why I forgot about adding on the feature myself. Maybe this is why Ford dropped the feature. Before you start digging into your project you might want to talk to the parts counter guy at a Ford dealership to make sure the project is as easy as you suspect. From what they told me there is a lot involved in installing it. I'll keep looking around for other places to fit the module, but knowing what it looks like and its size would help a lot.

If you slide a flat blade under the "drawer", it will depress the tab and you can pull the drawer straight out. Once out however, it is too shallow to house the homelink unit that I have.

So the search continues for a mounting location, or perhaps a visor with homelink from an MKZ???

We will see. :headspin:

Gotta love those hidden tabs :finger:

There is a lot of room around the center storage compartment. Here is how it comes out:

Remove the upper storage compartment mat and the 2 upper storage compartment screws.

Remove the upper storage compartment in the following sequence.

Pull the upper storage compartment toward the rear of the vehicle to release the 5 retaining clips.

Disconnect the electrical connector, if equipped.

Also the center console might be another good option.
