Ford recalls 14,000 Fusion hybrid EVs for battery issue

Recommended Posts

Ford is recalling 14,452 of its 2019-2020 Fusion Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) because the battery energy control module (BECM) may become damaged due to excessive voltage and current flow. A damaged BECM can result in a loss of drive power or fire, increasing the risk of a crash or injury, the company said in a report to NHTSA.Owners are advised not to charge their vehicles until the remedy, currently under development, is completed. Interim letters notifying owners of the safety risk are expected to be mailed July 10, 2023 and second letters will be sent once the remedy is available. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 23S33.

Has anyone gone thru the buyback for the 2019—2020 Ford Fusion® Energi Plug-in Hybrid currently offered by Ford for these vehicles?

I went thru the process. The buyback offer is fair, likely better than selling the car as a by-owner sale and varies of course by mileage. I opted to wait/hope for the replacement battery as I want a Plugin Hybrid and the Fusion is the perfect car if the issue can be resolved. Ford is dragging their feet as they need a new battery that they don't have, and they haven't found anyone who will make the battery given the small quantity they would need. I have a source that tells me that Ford is buying back these affected cars from their dealer's inventory as well as private owners and then shipping them off to be parted out. If that is true, the current owners of these 2019-20 PHEV Fusions are going to be screwed even more than they have been already.
