COLDFUSION
If you worked for Ford when it came time to name the Fusion, what name would you have chosen? My personal choice would have been 'Falcon" and "Comet" for Mercury's despite their use of "M" letered names.
robertlane
I actually like the Ford Fusion name the best. Futura is OK too though. If they used Falcon, there would have been too many comparions to the "cheap" Ford. . .mind you, I love the 1960s Falcons.

Yeah, there's always that comparison.....i just think the Falcon name would have carried the car a little better, especially among men. Is it just me or is Ford pushing this car too much towards women. I know all the stats about how women make 'x' percentage amouint of buying decisions. I just think Ford needs to show other people driving these things in commercials. I don't know, maybe I'm just reading into it too much.
thereisnospoon
Oh it's definitely geared towards women! Haven't you seen the car commercial where the girl in the fusion offers to pay for the dude in the Mustang's dry cleaning? Ugh - gag me with a spoon. Well, it would have to be a name that begins with an F or M to be consistent with the Focus, Five Hundred, Freestyle, Mustang, ....how about an M name? I actually like Fusion the best too. Plus they get a kick in the advertising department from Phil Mickelson's partnership with Nike. He wears a Ford shirt and hits Nike FUSION clubs. That golf bag has the word "Fusion" on it 10,000 times over (even the strap has Fusion tattooed all the way down it). I think Ford did fine with naming this beaut.
Drake
Fusion is a good name. They could have used Fairlane for the Fusion though instead of that "minivan". Then used Fusion for it. Its seems nowafter the Ford Fusion came out there are a million products using the name fusion.

Your forgot Gillete. Gillete has the 5 bladed fusion razor, Ford has the fusion with a 5 "bladed" grill.

Since you posted in June of '06 it's not likely that you are still reading or participating on the forum. Actually, I like the Fusion dry cleaning commercial and believe the Fusion name has a lot going for it. A new model should have a new name, not a recycled one. We just bought an Oxford white/black leather interior SEL V6 AWD and love it so far. I never thought I'd live long enough to see a $27,105 MSRP mid-sized Ford. As Bob Dylan noted two decades ago, "The times they are a'changin'" :doh copy:
urnews
I think Ford did fine with naming this beaut. I agree. But the most important thing, for resale value, is that the name (and model) not be dropped after 10 years, like what happened with the Taurus, Falcon, Fairlane, Sunliner, Skyliner, Comet, etc., etc. There is nothing worse than owning a make or model (Oldsmobile being a prime example) that is no longer manufactured. As an aside, from strictly the sound of it, I thought (still do think) the Ford Five Hundred was (is) a really dumb name. In case no one has noticed, Honda still has the Civic after all these years and Toyota still has the Corolla and Camry. There is something to be said for "new" but likewise "longevity." As new Fusion owners we should all hope A) That it becomes a big seller; That it is around for many, many years. The "new model" syndrome is highly overrated. The Neons (never liked them from the git-go) have already bitten the dust while the "new" Camry (redesigned for '07) captures "New Car of the Year" awards even though the name is decades old. The model game is highly overrated as a gimmick. When all is said and done, you either drive a Ford, a Chevy, a Chrysler product, Honda, Toyota, Mazda, Subaru, etc. etc. The 2006 and '07 Fusions are bold and beautiful Fords, but will they still be in 10 years or replaced with yet another "new" model? What's in a name? Would a rose by any other name smell the same? Boz
urnews
As an addendum I believe our Fusion should have been named Confusion. At 13 mpg in-city it is obviously confused, thinks it is an SUV or F-150 instead of a six-cylinder mid-size sedan that weighs 3,200 pounds. What a shocker! Seriously Boz - we're sympathetic but saying it 10 times a day is getting a little old. Can you cut it back to 4 or 5?

However, as a courtesy, I agree to cut it back to only five "Guzzler" posts a day. Maybe someone at FoMoCo will actually read one and say, "Hey, that is really terrible. We should have somebody fix that thing." Boz, Sorrowful in Salisbury
urnews
This forum, and several others devoted to the Fusion on the Internet, should be mandatory reading for several people at FoMoCo. It is an excellent way to gain free information from Ford product owners.
Meelaan
The biggest reason names like "Falcon" and "Futura" weren't used is Ford never renewed the copyrights to those names. Pep Boys owns the rights to Futura with their tire line. Falcon is licensed by ford in Australia, but not in North America. The name Fusion was untimely because, as mentioned, a razor was released at almost the same time with the same name. Because of that, I really never liked the name. Guess the razor just stuck. Ford's obsession with naming all their cars after "F" words and all their SUVs after "E" words is dorky. I would have liked to see "Maverick" brought back (it's used as the name of the European model of the Escape). Even Galaxy would have been good. This double "F" (i.e. "Ford F____") thing has got to end. Goofy.
ctrcbob
I'm with Meelaan. Galaxy would be a great name, although it should be with the top of the line Ford. Reminds me of my 64 Galaxy 500 and my Dads 65 Galaxy 500. Both were great cars.

Meelaan
Let's just be glad Ford didn't use that awful, awful concept name... SYNus
TheChosenWon
I think you guys missed a simple concept; the number of syllables in a name. 3 is 1 too many. Ford has a few exceptions, but 3 syllables names actually sounds old. 2 syllables name sound a little bit more edgy and aggressive; so Ga-La-Xie and Ma-Ve-Rick are not only too long, but the name really doesn't attrack the below retirement crowd. I know you don't sell a car only by his badge, but since sales are already not that high; let's just try to not bring it down some more with a name from the '70s. It's a new car, let's give it a new name that is more "today". And yes; Fu-Si-On IS 3 syllables but it's still pronounced "Fu-Sion" if you want to get technical on me. I have just about the same background in marketing as a mustard jar, but I would bet 1 pay check that 2 syllable name sells more to a younger crowd.
akirby
"sion" is only one syllable. Main Entry: fu·sion Pronunciation: 'fyü-zh&n
