Model A
2010 SE 4L, 6-speed auto. With the below freezing temps now, this car' transmission makes a whining gear sound for the first mile or two, until it warms up and then is quiet. I have exactly the same model and drivetrain as well. I, too, have the same noise/issue with the same symptoms. It's pitch most certainly rises and falls with engine speed in any transmission position. I had the selling dealer Ford service department (bought the car used) look at it after the test drive and was told the normal "they all do that....it is normal" B.S.. As we speak it is at my indy shop getting figured out. This weekend I used an automotive stethoscope to try to pinpoint the noise but was unsuccessful. I believe it is either the tensioner pulley, idler pulley or alternator. Hopefully this can be rectified inexpensively as I am past the 3/36000 warranty but do have an extended powertrain warranty. I read elsewhere on this site that someone else had the tensioner pulley replaced as it did the same thing. The noise is definitely coming from that area of the engine. Once it is properly repaired I will post what was found. Edited December 14, 2010 by modular
modular
It has been determined that it is the serpentine belt tensioner. My indy. shop said the parts guy at the Ford dealer he uses remarked that they keep a few in stock because it is a known failure.

Do you think it is a problem or normal? Hi, I rebuild all the transmissions in my Ford dealer. If the whinning noise is from the trany, it may be from a clogged filter. The bad news is the the filter is the last thing that comes out of te case when overhauling and the halves are split. The good news is try this....Put the car on a lift....bottom of the trany is a drain plug. Use a 7/16" wrench...yes american. Do this after running the car for 15 minutes. Let it drain for a half hour. The fluid Ford wants you to use is "LV" fluid, it turning black is normal. Put the plug back in and fill with abouty 5 1/2 qts of fluid. MAKE SURE IT IS FULL.This trany has to be at the full mark. Use only Ford LV Fluid. If it's better....give it another 1,000 miles and repeat. Contact me if you need anymore. turtlejj
Hi, I rebuild all the transmissions in my Ford dealer... What's your opinion regarding the long term reliability of the 6F35 transmission relative to others, given normal maintenance and no abuse? It's hard not to be concerned about its longevity after reading some of the forum posts.

Did the whine go away? Thanks

Tommy Hi TomC Is the LV fluid for the 4 cyl engine? In my 2007 V6 AWD, the owner's manual specifies XT-8-QAW for automatic transmission fluid. Accordint the folliwng chart, the oil number is no the same. LV is part number XT-10-QLV. http://www.google.ca/url?sa=t&source=web&cd=2&ved=0CCIQFjAB&url=http%3A%2F%2Ffcsdchemicalsandlubricants.com%2Fmain%2Fquickref%2Fatf.pdf&rct=j&q=%20XT-8-QAW&ei=6Pc6TcP3HMrbgQfgmOX5CA&usg=AFQjCNEYzTpVWtFCB671VjmDSuy4-BUK7w&cad=rja
willix
Even the Ford transmission guy turtlejj believes there is cause for concern.
RF Overlord
In my 2007 V6 AWD' date=' the owner's manual specifies XT-8-QAW for automatic transmission fluid.[/quote']twiggy, I'm not trying to speak for TomC, but I can answer your question. Your V6 uses an Aisin F-21 transaxle. The fluid is made by Mobil and is called 3309. Mobil sells it to a number of OEMs who re-brand it as their own. Ford's version is indeed what your owner's manual specifies. It is also sold as Toyota T-IV, which is what I use in my niece's '06, due to its being half the price of Ford's version. In fact, her dipstick even says "T-IV" on it!
ggmathew
I am a Ford Certified Tech since 1986. I bought the 2010 Fusion loaded to the gills. With my FORD discount and the incentives, I couldn't refuse. My FORD access may help you. Just ask. Tommy Hi Tommy, I know this is off the topic, but I would like to grab your attention to a 'sloshing sound' issue with Fusion 2.5L engine cars. Since you are a Ford certified tech, you may have something valuable to comment on this subject. Please go to; http://www.fordfusionforum.com/index.php?/topic/3085-2010-fusion-sloshing-sound-when-first-driven/page__pid__37762__st__1060#entry37762 Thanks,
modular
Hey Modular, Did you get the tensioner replaced? Did the whine go away? Thanks Yup, that was the problem. When the mechanic was calling around for a replacement he ended up going to the dealer or the part as no one else had them in stock. The Ford dealer parts guy told him that they keep a few in stock at all times as this is a common issue.

Thanks for the update - I stopped by my dealer this morning to have them check the whine and also my hard shifts when cold but... Since it seems to be most noticeable when cold he suggested bringing it back when I can leave it over night so they can check it while cold. They don't have a trans tech on Saturdays. In one sense it was good that he didn't want me to leave it and then tell me they couldn't duplicate it. I hate having to leave it over night though. He did mention that they've had some issues with "tensioners" making noise. His words, no prompting from me. So I'll drop it off next week.
con_fusion
Update on the whine noise. I was told mine is not the transmission (although they are going to replace the valve body for other issues). The source of my whine seems to be the serpentine belt tensioner pulley. Parts are coming.
cartmanea
My new-to-me 2010 Fusion 2.5L does this as well. Definitely sounds like it's coming from the passenger side (belt/pulleys) and not the driver's side (transmission).
cartmanea
Pulled the belt off today and verified it was the tensioner pulley. It was pretty worn and the pulley had a good amount of wobble to it. Parts are ordered and I'll be replacing the tensioner and belt next weekend. I have to rant though. I have a press and would normally press out the bearing and replace that, cost about $6. Ford used a @#$% plastic pulley for the tensioner and it looks like it's molded on the bearing, so it is a replacement only part. To add to that, they don't sell just the pulley/bearing, you have to replace the entire tensioner.
