2010 - Clunking when reversing

Recommended Posts

Hi stewsco

Excellent reply! Thanks. Now I need to figure out why the SM insisted I perform the maintenance immediately when I first complained about the sound. He claimed this was a safety concern. Could it be something else or was he takIng advantage of my gullibility? They did charge me $100 for the job (that came undone a few weeks later).

That question I cannot answer my friend. Could it be something else? Sure it could. It does however sound exactly like what I have experienced on 2 different cars with the same brake system, but it wouldn't be wise to make a definite determination based on an internet discussion. Having a better understanding of the brake system now, I would advise you to either return to your normal dealer, another dealer or even an independent shop if this will set your mind at ease. If the noise is in fact what I have experienced, I do not believe it poses a safety threat but it is annoying on a car that new. I also don't believe it to be covered under warranty, but a good dealership would take care of it for you just to cement your business. It takes about 20 minutes and 50 cents worth of lube at the most.

In case your weren't able to locate it, I think I have been successful in attaching a diagrahm of the system.

  • 4 weeks later...

Going back to the OP, I think I got to experience this clunk first hand this morning.

I had washed the car and put it in the garage. Went out of town for a week. When I first went to drive it this morning, I put it in reverse and let off the brake and - CLUNK!

I had a panic attack for a minute cuz it sounded like the transmission was making that noise but then I realized it was the brakes and the surface rust built up on the rotors after the wash.

WHEW! The first bit down the block the rotors were a bit noisey but things got back to normal after a little driving.
