Hi everyone, this is my first time to the forum and I look forward to everyone's thoughts and input on what could be wrong with my Ford Fusion. This is issue happened about 6 months ago but due to financial issues I was unable to get the vehicle fixed so it has sit in my driveway. Now that a little bit of my financial strain has been lifted am I looking to get my Ford Fusion fixed.

One morning driving home I noticed the car had a slight funny sound to it but as I got closer to the house and driveway the sound basically went away. Since the sound was no longer present it was hard to find out what truly was this issue so I shrugged it off and went on into the house. Next morning when I got up to go to work I started the car and it had a rough idle and shook a little, now I knew because of this I was not going to work that morning. I placed the car in drive to let it roll a little to see what would happen and the car sounded horrible and shook like crazy. I stopped and put the car in reverse and placed it back into the driveway and the car has sit ever since.

You will notice in the video a ping or pop sound. This sound is not a constant ping or pop its basically sporadic and sounds like as if a bolt or screw is bouncing around inside. Again it is not a constant ping or pop sound. In the video I have my girlfriend shift the vehicle from Park to Reverse to Drive and back to Park again and she gives a little gas as well. I didn't make the video to long as I am afraid to keep the vehicle running to long. Please check the video out and let me know what you think or what you might think it could be. Please help and Thank everyone of you very much for any knowledge or advice you can offer.

Yeah, that doesn't sound good. Did the car have an exhaust leak before? What is the oil level currently at?

Honestly I would start with a compression test on all cylinders. I would also think about draining the oil or cutting open the filter to look for bearing shavings.

I think it's much more than a cam phaser. If the cam phaser went bad I'm thinking the car wouldn't start. And I don't think it would explain the rattling noise. If the cam phaser was off I think you would get a trouble code. Does this car have any trouble codes?

It sort of sounds like a loose rod to me.

Again, start with a compression test on all cylinders then go from there. You might have to take the oil pan off to inspect the bearings too.

Yeah I'm thinking a rod or an arm is broken or something after looking around online. Is this an easy or very hard job to fix do you know? And is it an expensive fix? I don't plan on taking it to Ford in my area as everyone says the dealership around here is worthless and extremely expensive for bad work, so I plan on finding a shop downtown somewhere to work on it. But if this turns out to be a bad lifter or arm what do you think I am looking at here? Is this something I could replace? I have replaced valve cover gaskets and what not on cars so yeah. Any ideas? And does anyone else want to chime in here?

If it's a rod it's in the realm of major engine repair. Like it would be cheaper to replace the engine than fix it. Valve cover gaskets are very easy in comparison. Have it towed to a professional.

Agreed. Major engine repairs are a thing of the past. Unless you are going in and doing a performance rebuild, just replace it with a low mile salvage yard engine or if you can afford it, a rebuilt/crate from Ford.

What I hear sounds like a possible misfire. A rod knock would sound lower and be very consistent. The '06s had issues with coils.

Either way, I would suggest at least having your Ford dealer do a power balance test. It can tell you right off the hop (in a matter of seconds) which cylinder (or bank of cylinders) is the issue. Goes a long way to narrowing down your focus.

Also - it is cheaper just to get a low mileage used engine and doing a swap than any kind of major repair.

I think we forgot to ask if the check engine light is on or flashing? If the light is on you have trouble codes that you should have read that might give us clues.

If that's a misfire, then you would definitely have a misfire code for it and perhaps the CEL would be flashing. My updated guess is perhaps something with the valves because I hear the exhaust note changing. Again not really sure but I would start with a compression test.

Hi everyone

When I took the video of the car that I posted above there was no check engine light or nothing that came on at all. There was no dash lights at all that came on.

I know once or maybe twice before now when I showed a friend the car and asked what they thought the check engine light flashed on for a quick second and went away. I cannot remember if blinked a couple times or stayed solid for a quick minute. It was really quick and went away.

I'm almost thinking it looks like I'm just going to have to replace the engine - my guess.

I found a Fusion engine which is the same 3.0 V6 engine from a wreaked Fusion for $550 and 60,000+ miles on it. The engine has a 6 month warranty on it too.

Plus I called a guy who builds race cars and works on everyday cars as well. This guy pulls engines in pretty quick timing as well. He quoted me $700 to pull the old engine and put the new engine in.

So so far this is what I have. Any thoughts?

If it is just a misfire... throwing in a couple of coils is cheaper than doing an engine swap. However, like I said, the '06s had issues with coils and if it cooked your PCM as well (which wasn't horribly uncommon), putting in another engine won't solve anything. It'd be nice to know what's happening before you put an engine in, and then it 'runs' the same...
