cornfield25
I have a 2009 Ford Fusion SEL 4 cylinder and I have a parasitic draw on the battery when the key is removed. Hooking up the multimeter its around 125 - 130 milliamps after 40 minutes of the car sitting. I have removed every fuse and after removing fuse 19 under the hood I found out its on the SJB (Smart Junction Box). I have traced the problem down to the C2280a harness connector on the SJB (Smart Junction Box) under the dash. When I remove the connector for C2280a the milliamps go down to 5 milliamps and when I reconnect it, it jumps back up to 125 - 130 milliamps. Has anyone else seen this problem? Any help woud be appreciated. Chris
FusionDiffusion
Important: did you leave the multimeter on and connected for the 40 minute period before the SJB enters sleep mode? Time starts at zero when the multimeter is connected and resets if the connection is broken and then made or in some cases if the DMM is turned off.
cornfield25
Yea, I waited 40 min after meter was connected. even after a couple fuses made something wake up and amps jumped up to .600, I waited around 40 minutes after that too.Still would end up reading 125 to 130 milliamps. Will do again tommorrow and wait an hour and see if stays the same.
FusionDiffusion
Okay, just wanted to check becaue I've seen a lot of false alarms from people when they don't realize they're interupting the circut. C2280A carries the power wire from fuse 19, so it makes sense the draw goes way down when you disconnect it. However this really doens't help narrow down what is causing the draw if you really have one. Ideally you would want to start pulling fuses from the SJB to further isolate the draw. cornfield25
I have pulled every fuse on SJB and none of them made the milliamps drop.
FusionDiffusion
Hmm, that's a little strange. If you had all the SJB fuses pulled at once it might not like that and refuse to sleep. Otherwise that seems to point to the SJB as the problem. If you have the capability of pulling SJB codes with a pro grade scan tool I would try that next. Otherwise you might have to replace the SJB, which may involve dealer reprograming.
cornfield25
Ok, finally got a day to work on the car again. A few weeks ago i had Ford do a charging test on the car and they said everything looked good. Tech did say Battery was on the low side but good. So i decided before i continue anymore troubleshooting to get a new battery. After getting battey in i started a new parasitic draw test. The car finially went to sleep in a little over a hour. And now i am only showing 11 milliamps. So I dont know if it was a low battery but I am crossing my fingers that its all good now. Chris Just to note I did the parasitic draw test twice after putting new battery in and both times car didnt fully go to sleep till a full hour. FusionDiffusion
Okay, good to know. Bad batteries can cause a lot of strange problems in new cars. If voltage was getting too low the SJB would be resetting or not going to sleep. In this case I think you were chasing an effect rather than the cause of your dead battery.
