Hi

Owner of 2013 fusion titanium with selectshift transmission. Can any one advise me if the paddle shifters are supposed to be operabale when in both the Drive or Sport position or only when in the Sport position. There have been a few times when I have hit the down shift paddle accidently while in Drive position and it will downshift which does not seem logical and contrary to instruction manual.

Having a lot of problems with this vehicle and just hoping this is not another one

thanks

Thanks for reply, not so sure that it is a good feature when in drive as it can be accidently shifted. For passing I will stick with the old method of depressing the gas pedal to down shift

They seem to work in Drive even though they shouldn't according to the manual. It's a good feature since you can downshift quickly for passing without having to move the shifter.

The manual isn't clear, but it doesn't say they don't work in D. If just says they do work in S. It's known as the "live in Drive" feature and it is intended for passing or for a quick downshift to go down hill. It will hold the gear you select for a certain amount of time, depending on what's going on. For example, I've used it to downshift to 2nd gear for a steep mountain descent. It will hold 2nd gear all the way to the bottom of the mountain, but then when terrain levels out and you start to get back on the gas, it will go back to regular D mode. Ford's first paddle shift cars didn't have this feature and people complained, so they copied the strategy from companies like Acura that had it first.

Aha - that makes sense but the manual should explain this.

Below is the response I have recieved from Ford with regard to my inquiry on the subject of paddle shifters

Thank you for contacting Ford Motor Company. This is Jonathan with the Ford Customer Relations Center.

I apologize if there was any miscommunication regarding your question. As suggested in my previous email it is recommended by Ford, that the SelectShift Paddles should be used when the vehicle’s gearshift lever is in the S (sport) mode setting.

Although, after consulting with our Technical Expert, he did advise that the SelectShift Paddles can indeed be used in either mode S (sport) and/or D (drive). Temporary manual control is provided when pulling the paddles with the gearshift in the D (Drive) position. The system will determine when temporary manual control is no longer desired and reverts back to automatic control.

Thank you for contacting Ford Motor Company,
