Jamers99
So do we have any idea on the relative gas mileage on both of these engines? Do we know if they will run on 87 octane?
jlucas3
It runs on 87 octane for sure. I haven't heard the mileage yet and am very interested in that myself.
Pioneer
Ford website says that early estimates are high 20's for the V6, low 30's for the I-4. http://www.fordvehicles.com/futurevehicles/2006fusion/
Jamers99
That's a bit vague. What I really want to know is the city mpg estimates because that is much of my driving. My guess is they're referring to hwy mpg.

Didn't find that but this one had mpg info. 4 cyl manual 23/31 4 cyl auto - not listed 6 cyl auto 21/29 Haven't seen this elsewhere so can't swear to its accuracy.

With those figures I'll be buying the V6. I'm not sacrificing 50 hp to gain 1 mpg. I was hoping for better figures. Hell my 500 gets 21/29 with the same V6 and it's 600 lbs heavier.
Earthspirit60
I just returned from a 2000 mile trip. My SEL V6 got 29.8 mpg as a trip avaerage, with an average speed of 71 mph (on the computer) This included much mountain driving as well as flat interstae droning. I am pleased since my around town mileage has been 22 mpg.

Dyoct
I got just a shy over 27 on weekend trip to Michigan a while ago. And that was averaging 80 in a V6 SE that I rented since my SO can't drive a stick and wanted to share the driving. I feel in love with that V6, later that week I began flogging it all the time...dropped the MPG down to 22 :happy feet:

blkfusion sel
I just logged 35.8 at an average speed of 77 mph and very big trunk load on a trip to Florida In May.It has the I-4 engie ant the auto tranny & I had 5100 miles on the odemeter and ran 87 fuel. We love this car and when you spend 13 hours in the drivers seat you learn alot about how comfortable a vehicle is. we have a blk on blk leather sel model
thereisnospoon
Did you get pretty crappy mileage at the beginning? The service guy tells me that the 16.3mpg that my computer is telling me I'm getting will go up whenever I put on the first 1,000 miles. I've got almost 500 miles on her yet and can't get that damn computer to budge more than 16.3. I've got the V6 SEL and no I don't flog it around town - I do every now and again, but mostly just standard driving.
swoop1156
Here is my info that I keep track of on a spreadsheet. Inserted in some cells are comments... One of them is when I recorded 30.4mpg on the expressway, but then I did some city driving and knocked it down. I'd say 90% of my driving is in the city in temperatures at 85-90+ degrees with the A/C on, hence the lower numbers. Also recorded, is the MPG and cost effectiveness difference/increase/derease running with a tuning program available from Bob Jusnes over at JusnesModified.com. I have used the 93 performance, 87 performance and stock -- yet to run is the 93 torque -- which I think will benefit ME being city driving all the time. Anyway, on to the data:
Drake
I try to avoid Shell and Citgo. I get horrible mileage on their gas for some reason. Only time I heavily used them is after the hurricanes cause they were the only ones had gas.
thereisnospoon
Well, my gauge is starting to creep up - right now it's at 17.2 mpg. Only 500 miles on the ODO though and I realize I might not get great mileage "out of the box" - I guess I'm just really impatient. I traded in my truck for much more than 17.2 mpg!!! Has anyone installed a K&N or any kind of Vortec insert to see if this helps? I have thought about doing the tune chips, but I don't think I wanna mess with it. That's a very nice spreadsheet - it's something I need to start keeping. Will post my data in 6 months!
Milan I4
Hi, I just did 2500 miles round trip from Chgo to Tampa and drove around there a few days. 4 cyl auto....30.8 mpg doing 75 on the Interstate. When I got to the Tampa area it was hot and humid. AC on max, parked, waiting for wife who was shopping....that tank I got 20.6 mpg. Car ran great the whole trip without a problem, Started the trip at 3100 miles. Got the oil changed at a local Ford dealer in Florida. Engine has the FL2017B cartridge filter. Don't know if that's good or bad. Anyway, the car was pretty comfortable with the tilt and tele wheel, power driver seat. Car is basic, only option is Auto trans. My conslustion is that it's a great car but I'd rather have the V6 for the extra power. There doesn't seem to be that much difference in mpg's compared to the 4. But it my wife's car and she loves it just like it is. If any of you guys are on the fence about which engine....... Get the V6! The 4 is peppy with adequate acceleration but really noisy.
bassnutz
I average about 34 to 38 mpg out of my Fusion. And I'm fine by that!
snowman1
After 5000 miles my 4cyl auto is hanging around 26 overall. My driving mix is probably 65% highway 35% stop n go town. Does this sound reasonable to everyone? I guess I'm not overly thrilled about it. I only run the a/c when necessary, and I can't foresee it being much of a factor. I'm not a leadfoot, either. Are there any dealer PCM upgrades for the 4cyl like there have been for the 6cyl? Will the dealers flash your PCM if you ask? Thanks.

No way you're getting 38 from a V6 unless it's all downhill. After 5000 miles my 4cyl auto is hanging around 26 overall. My driving mix is probably 65% highway 35% stop n go town. Stop-n-go kills mpg. Our new (300 miles) V6 SEL AWD is only getting 14 mpg in town, 16 mpg overall, according to the onboard computer, which is only an estimate. This is terrible. I sure hopes this situation improves, dramatically. Anybody else with a new Fusion that is doing so poorly? NaplesBill
I'd suggest resetting the mpg in the computer. I did that when driving off the lot on my Zephyr and I've been averaging 20.6.

akirby
What does "flash your PCM" mean? Please enlighten me. First you get a trenchcoat, then you....... Actually it just means to reload new programming into the car's computer (Powertrain Control Module - PCM). It uses flash memory. It's just like reloading the software on an Ipod or similar device.

Wow, I'm a little late with this reply, but better late than never I suppose. What I posted was correct. My old Fusion (SE V6) was getting about 34 to 38 mpg. I had a K&N air filter as well as a Magnaflow exaust on it. At one point, my computer read 48 mpg. I'm not getting anywhere close to that on the new AWD fusion. But I'm going to try like hell to get the best mpg I can out of this one.
