how you guys all doing, newbie here, hope im welcome,

just want to share what happened recently with my 2008 ford fusion 2 li l4 fwd, ive been noticing some chirping from cold start and vibrations on the steering wheel i figured maybe the belt and the tires are flat or some sort and ill take a look when i have a chance, one night, i was about to drive home when suddenly the car turned on and starts making noise and could not move the steering wheel, i immediately shut it off and look at the engine and see the belt got displaced, as I look deeper, the idler pulley is out completely bolt bent out, its late at night so i got it towed home, the next day i called ford to have it towed to the stealership i meant the dealership place and have checked out coz i know i got extended warranty, today they called me and asking 2000 dollars to fix it as it is not covered under the extended warranty.

it looks like this is a common problem and my car has only 54000 miles, babied this car all this time, and for that mechanical part to break like that for me is a mechanical failure and a manufacture defect that they need to fix for free and for my case should be covered under the extended warranty, but due to some technicality or paper work they have, they said its not covered which for me is ridiculous and i was wonderin if any of you have similar experience and any legal advice to do or contacted someone regarding this matter. sorry about the long message, hope no one has ever caused an accident or fatality with this problem.

There are several levels of Ford extended warranties. As the coverage increases, so does the cost of the warranty. Powertrain is the lowest level of them, and for the engine it only covers internally lubricated parts. If you thought you were getting a more inclusive extended warranty, you need to talk to the salesman that sold it to you, not the service department. They are not the ones that put you there.

It would help if you used a few periods. If it's not covered by the warranty you chose then it's not covered. The details of what is covered or not covered is very clearly spelled out. This can't be a common problem because it's the first I've heard of it and I've been a Fusion owner and forum member since 05.

I also can't believe it costs $2K to fix.

Yes. Go here for the list of engine parts covered under Ford's basis ESP powertrain warranty. The idler pulley is not covered. But even the Premium Care warranty doesn't cover this. It does, however, cover the harmonic balancer and bolt.

I, too, can't see how it would cost $2G to fix an idler pulley. Something is missing from the story here.

they said its a consequential damage, meaning the idler pulley itself is cheap but the one it attaches to is damage which is the engine block and have to remove the engine to fix it, its a common problem as I see a lot of people experiencing the same i did and some of them even set the engine on fire, maybe it did not happen to you yet so dont be saying you never heard of it, i bet you, once you experience this symptoms you will google it and would surprise yourself with people experiencing the same thing

I just googled it, I can't find anything that describes the same issue as you.

All cars have issues with slipping belts - making chirping noises. If you choose to ignore them and wait to see what happens, bad thing can happen.

It looks like something similar has been posted before. In this post the member described consequential damage to the block that required an expensive repair. Fortunately for the owner, an independent shop devised a workaround. Since he's never posted a followup, we have no way of knowing if the repair held up.

When did the Extended Service Contract start? A 2008 Model Year car could be over 6 years old by this time so the OEM warranty is long expired by now.

My brother had a similar problem with his 08 Focus. His repair bill was about $1,500 as well. There's more to the story, his vehicle was involved in a collision and this was some leftover damage and the shop had to replace the front engine cover and the mounts and brackets...

This is a common problem, I've found three posts in this forum alone. I began searching because the idler pulley bolt broke on my Fusion in September. I had it repaired (although my repair bill was only $700...I did not go through a dealership), and three weeks later it happened a second time.

I wouldn't call 3 in 7 years common.

This has happened 4 times in the past year to my wife's 2008 Fusion. I would consider 4 times in a year for the same part common or frequent. This is also a safety issue as it has happened to my wife in traffic. The power staring quits working and she is small with little upper body strength to get the car to a safe area! I have also seen several threads in this forum and else where describing the same problem. According to the repair shop National Tire and Battery NTB the bolt is surrounded by a pan/cover so it's not flush with the engine block. With increased friction and heat I am guessing the bolt becomes soft and bends. Does anyone have a picture of the bolt and the area it's bolted into? Just wandering if the correct replacement bolt/part is being used.

I have had this happen more times than I count on both my hands with 07 Fusion. Ford needs to realize there is a problem here. Same as Jr above, when pulley bolt breaks, you have no power steering and when your wife is driving at 65mph and sudden loss of power steering occurs, it was a nightmare for her. Explaining the issue to FORD over the phone with lady who didnt even know how to spell Idler Pulley (true story), was fun to say the least. FORD says there hasn't been a recall for this part, since it isnt a safety issue, I beg to differ. Anyhow, I have tried just about any way possible to fix this, other than recasting the part of the block this bolt threads into. I have owned nothing but FORDS in my life, but starting to wonder what they are coming to. If anyone wants specific info on what I have done, send me a message. Or if anyone has a potential fix, I would love to hear it. Thanks for your time!
