How many miles per dollar?

When I was in college in the 60's, I used to be able to go 60 miles for one dollar. That was when gas was about $0.33 per gallon, and I was driving a 61 Ford Falcon that got 20 mpg on the road. It was a 200 cubic inch, straight 6 cylinder engine, 2 speed automatic, 3.50 rear axle. Top speed, about 94 mph.

Now to me, the price of gas is ridiculous today, at over $3 a gallon, although I realize that it is cheaper here than almost everywhere else in the world.

But my personal standard today is that I need to go at least 10 miles per dollar, or I feel like I am in a taxi with the meter running. We are all getting better than 10 miles per dollar, but not by much depending on how much gas costs where you live. Here is a math trick: Multiply the cost per gallon of gas that you see posted at the gas station by 10, and that is the mpg you need, to get 10 miles per dollar. Simple example, you need to get 40 mpg if gas costs $4 per gallon.

Gas here costs $1.30/litre. That is $4.92/US Gallon. Recently it was at high as $1.43. That's $5.43/US Gallon.

I need between 49 and 53 US-MPG.

They do sell cars here with 50 Imperial MPG, but in that case the cost of gas is $5.90- $6.50 / Imperial Gallon.

I average about 8L/100km, 30USMPG, 35ImpMPG in my non-hybrid 2011.

Thanks for the detailed feedback. I used to have an 86 Ford Escort 1.6L station wagon that would get 31 mpg consistently. It was a 4 speed manual. It had AC but no power door locks as an option. So I installed a set of 4 automatic door locks on it, an aftermarket generic kit from J. C. Whitney. It worked fine except they were a little slower than the factory version. They were motor driven, same as the factory ones.

I guess if I'm travelling in Canada, I can't get my 10 miles per dollar, because right now I'd have to get 49 mpg. I wonder if most people appreciate a car that gets even 40 mpg. Large motorcycles don't even do that. It is a serious technical challenge to get into the 40-50 mpg range, with today's internal combustion engines that are only 30% efficient, diesels up to 40%. Have a good day.
