Faint buzzing sound...

So, I recently purchased a CPO 2012 Fusion Sport. I've been enjoying the car for the last several weeks; however, it seems that a faint buzzing noise has crept in. When accelerating (moderately or briskly), there is a buzzing noise that is audible from around 1800RPM to around 2200RPM. It sounds as though there might be a loose bracket or shield or something under the hood, but the noise isn't really apparent when the engine is just revved - you can hear it best when it's under load (i.e. is accelerating under power).

Has anyone else had this experience or heard about it anywhere? I need to do some more test drives and stuff, but it's not like I can drive down the street with my head under the hood. The car is still under factory warranty, but I want to have as much info as possible BEFORE I take it to the dealer.

Hi Seething. Most often this type of "buzzing" or rattling sound is due to harmonic resonance of an loose exhaust or catalytic converter shield. The harmonic resonance occurs when a particular set of circumstances/vibrations are in place, such as during particular rpm ranges as in your vehicle (1800-2200 rpm).

My best advice? Don't waste too much time trying to diagnose where the noise is coming from yourself. It does not matter what you hear or where you tell them you think it is coming from if they don't hear it too. Therefore, the best course of action is to make a service appointment, take the car in for service and ask your Service Advisor if a Service Tech can take a ride with you. Demonstrate the noise at the required RPM so that the Service Tech states "Yes I hear it". This will help avoid the dreaded "could not duplicate customers concern" diagnosis.

Keep us updated and good luck.

Thanks. That's good advice. A ride-along will probably be the best method to ensure that they know what I'm talking about. I was hoping that maybe this was a common problem and someone else had already been through it (i.e. could tell me what is the likely cause of the buzzing noise). I'm really booked up for the next week or so, so it'll be some time before I can get the car to the dealer for service.

I'll report back (eventually).
