I will want an extra key that I can program it right away in case I lose one as it takes two programmed keys to program a new one. I just bought a used Fusion, that only came with one key. The remote key with the dealer activation included was $300. The basic one was $100. We (my wife - but don't tell her that) have a history of losing one key/remote combination for every new vehicle we get. I'd suggest getting a basic PATS blank from eBay , having it cut at your local key shop and programming it in as the third key yourself. If you ever lose one of the original keys, you can program a new one (also from eBay naturally) without needing the dealer to do it. When we (ahem) lost one of the key/remote combos for our GM minivan I ordered the new blank and remote from a seller on eBay and had the dealer program the van the next time it was in for scheduled maintenance. READ FIRST>>>>>> You Must NOT touch the brake pedal during programming!(it will exit) ALL actions MUST be done within 20 Seconds of the previos action! Car will exit programming mode if no activity for more than 20 seconds Here is the programming code------>>>>> 1) Make sure you have ALL of the keys to be programmed with you!!!! 2) Unlock your car electronically with the key fob or door lock button 3) Put a key in the ignition (doesn't matter which one) 4) Turn the key from the OFF position to RUN(not Start) position 8 times within 10 seconds with the 8th turn ending in the RUN position. the doors will lock then unlock to confirm programming mode. 5) Within 20 seconds of completing the previous step. press any button on fob 1. the door locks will cycle to confirm the fob 1 has been programmed. 6) Repeat for all keys to be programmed 7) After all keys are programmed turn the key to OFF position. the door lockes will cycle to confirm the car has exited the programming mode. Did your instructor say why they strongly suggested you do that? Is it for the protection of consumers so that no rogue keys are programmed or as a revenue model for the service department? The small problem with that is that page 111 of the 2008 Fusion Owners Guide describes the method for the end user to program new SecuriLock keys as long as they have two working keys (both start the engine). I guess the percentage of owners that would program their own keys is small, and the percentage of those who would assume that if it didn't work it wasn't their fault ("doing it wrong") must be even smaller. But for me, I'd just say, "Hey, it's broken. Fix it." (Assuming that I wouldn't wait until the warranty period was over before programming a new key.) The troubling part is that all that would come of it would be a black eye for Ford and/or the dealership.
