Check Rear Park Aid error and Crosstraffic alert system fault

Recommended Posts

So, yesterday I went to backup and my rear park aid started beeping (false alarm btw) and then speaker crackled and then nothing. No sound. Now I have a Check Rear Park Aid error and Crosstraffic alert system fault (or something like that).

Since the speaker has sounded a bit funky for a while when it was working, I'm guessing the problem is with the rear park aid speaker in the parcel shelf.

From the diagrams and in looking in the trunk, the speaker appears to be positioned in the parcel shelf on the driver's side. No room to slip fingers in there through access holes and remove the speaker without taking the parcel panel out (so it seems).

This seems to be described in this post - http://www.fordfusionforum.com/topic/10115-where-can-i-find-the-rear-park-aid/

So my question is, how much of a pain is this to do DIY? The part is about $30 but I'd rather not pay for 2 hours of labor if I don't have to. I have the shop manuals and the steps include removing the seat bolsters, removing the c-pillars, parcel panel etc.

Has anyone done this?

Thanks

It's either the speaker or the rear park aid module. I would want to get a reader on it and check out the codes before you start. The PAM is actually easier to replace, and might be the problem instead.

I've done the parcel shelf. First you have to remove the C-pillar covers (single bolt under the cover and then pull). Next are the side bolsters, which are the hardest part. There is a screw at the bottom if you spread open the gap between the rear seat pad and the bolsters. The tops of the bolsters are held in by this tricky lever system. The passenger side you can release by sticking a screwdriver behind in the right place, but the right side you have to make a hook and go fishing behind the bolster for 10-20 minutes until you get it. After that flip down the seats, remove the plastic covers over the latches, and then remove the black circle fasteners (those can be a PIA). After that the parcel shelf will lift out and you can get to the speakers.

I have the instructions and pictures somewhere, PM me then.

Thanks. Is this something that would show on an OBD-II reader? Or just the Ford scan tool?

FORScan can get it if you have a modified ELM327 scan tool. Can be had for $25 if you mod it yourself.

Thank you. I checked that out and it definitely looks like something to have. I have an ELM327 scan tool I can modify for that.

In this case I did go ahead and order the park aid alarm speaker. I created a wire with a loop on the end to release the driver side rear seat bolster. I found I was able to push the bolster away from the door slightly and see the top of the latch so it helped to be able to see if my wire was looped over the top of the release. I used wire from a sipral notebook. I took a 10" piece off and straightened it to use. I removed the C-Pillar on the drivers side. I removed the seat latch covers and the push pins holding the parcel shelf cover. I was able to lift the parcel shelf cover a bit and get access to the parking alarm speaker.

I replaced the speaker and put everything back together. I found it easier to put the C-pillar back on before putting the bolster back in place.

Started the car and my errors are gone. Backup and cross traffic alarms are now working. A lot of work for a small $30 part.

I originally started this thread and I just had to replace this lousy little speaker for the 2nd time. Good thing is I was quite a bit faster this time around. Once again it seemed to fix the problem. Hopefully the part this time had a latest revision that will make it last a little longer.
