celticfdguy
I just bought a 2010 Ford Fusion V6 with flex fuel. So far, everything is great. It seems to drive perfectly. However I noticed an odd sound from the engine bay an decided to look closer. After starting the car, the engine purrs like a kitten. After about 15 seconds, I hear this odd ticking/knocking sound. After about a minute or two, it stops. here is a link to the video with sound. The sounds starts 18 seconds in after a cold start. http://youtu.be/iwFq9dbX2ws Where my hand/fingers are at about 50 seconds in is where I believe the sound to be originating from. Is this normal or should I be worried? I bought the car used, low mileage at 33,000 so I am kind of paranoid! Thanks Edited March 5, 2014 by celticfdguy
BlueOval2010
It sounds like a valve train noise, but I've heard comments that it may be the fuel injectors opening and closing. My 3.5 clicks like that for a minute or so, then stops after it warms up. Hopefully it's normal.
celticfdguy
Thanks for the update. Good to hear I am not the only one. As long as it is normal I don't mind it.
FusionDiffusion
Can you take a good picture where you think the vibration is coming from so I can see what's there? The thing with the yellow, green, and brown wires is the EGR valve. Did you feel that? I suppose it could be a noisy fuel injector, but you would want to try to narrow it down some more.
BlackBetty
It sounds like a valve train noise to me too especially if it goes away once it warms up on a cold start. My old 2.5L Duratec in my Cougar did that too. I've had faulty injectors before when I swapped in my 3L and they were constant and it smelt like fuel. Any check engine lights? OK, I will do so on lunch today. Where my fingers are at 50 seconds in is really where it feels the strongest. While in the car, I don't hear anything. I only noticed it when I had the hood open.

phenom248
I have the same car but mine is 2011. It is the 3.0l V6 and it makes the same noise as yours does. In my opinion its normal, my engine pulls as hard as it had from day one without any problems. However I feel the car could use a trans swap but that's a different topic.
BlackBetty
Yeah my hunch is a valve train noise
Botts
Just to add my experience with the 3.0L at least in a 2006, I have never heard that noise. A light ticking like what is heard prior to 0:18 is all my Fusion has ever made. That's with several -35f to -45f starts as well. Some with block heater plugged in, some without. I do use synthetic though, which does assist with the super frigid starts.
SCS
Hello Celticfdguy, I have the same car and ran into the same issue. I would here a knocking noise coming from the engine intermittently. I was finally able to make it to the dealer while it was knocking, unfortunately my suspicions were correct, the hydraulic valve lash adjusters were bad. The knocking noise was cause by the adjusters not filling properly, they were soft as the Mechanic noted. All he adjusters were replaced under warranty.
FusionDiffusion
Well you're the first instance of this I've heard of. Was the engine full of sludge from poor oil maintenance?
SCS
I had about 15K miles on it when the noise started, engine was and is spotless, Pennzoil Ultra from day1. The tech had seen this before a couple of times, as soon as he herd the knocking noise he knew exactly what it was
