Clarification About Programming Keys

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

New to the forum and picked up a '12 Steel Blue Metallic Fusion SE from an owner. He only had one key. I'm trying to figure out the cheapest way to get another key or 2. I don't care about the extra functions like remote lock/unlock. But rather just to start the car. I dont mind opening the door with the key as long as I can start the car.

Anyways, I've seen two different methods. And I'm confused. Can anyone clarify? Here they are:

1.

2. http://support.ford.com/vehicle-features/program-integrated-keyhead-transmitter

On the first link video, the guy has the same key as mine and is doing that on a 2011 Fusion. Someone commented that you can do that with only one key.

On the second link from Fords site, they describe the key as the "Integrated Keyhead Transmitter" and to program a new key, you will need TWO working keys.

But both methods are different. So which one works for which model?

The key I have looks like the picture below and has "HA" engraved on the back.

I also have a 2012 model, and the keys I got with it look like the one in your second picture. They also have "HA" engraved on them. Ford calls these "Integrated Keyhead Transmitters."

The process for programming new keys starts on page 114 of your owner's manual. It is NOT the procedure that is shown in your video clip. It is a different sequece. Unfortunately, if you only have one key, you will need to go to a dealer to get another one programmed. According to the manual, if you have at least two working keys, then you can program another one yourself. If you only have one, you cannot do it yourself at home. Some locksmiths (and my local Ace Hardware store) claim that they can program a key even if you only have one working key. I didn't check out their claims, because I already had two working keys. What I did was to make another one (just a key, not a remote transmitter) so I would still have two working keys if I lost one. That way, if I did lose a key, I would still have two working keys available and I could program another one myself without having the expense of taking it to the dealer.

Bottom line: If you only have one working key, you will probably have to go to a dealer to get another one made, unless you can find a local locksmith/hardware store who is able to do it for you. Good luck.

If you only have one key then only the dealer can add a second one for security reasons (you don't want the valet or service person to be able to program another fob to your car). Doesn't matter where you get it as long as it's the right type.

IF you have 2 working keys you can add the third one yourself following the instructions in YOUR owner's manual (not a youtube video).

Thanks alot guys for the info. Looks like I will go to dealer. But would it be cheaper if I buy the key from... say eBay and have the dealer cut it out and program it? Or is it cheaper to have the dealer get the key, cut it, and program it? I thought I saw uncut keys with unprogrammed chip for cheap on eBay.

Anything bought / ordered at the dealer will be at some premium, but you'll likely never have to question authenticity or worry about a DOA key there. I don't remember the last time I bought anything on eBay.
