montematt
Hi, so i bought my fusion a few months ago with 97k and a 12,000 mile warranty. I noticed the engine was making a knocking noise, so i took it back to the dealer. the mechanic told me it was th "shutter valves" in the intake, that the rod they rest on was loose and they were rattleing. he unplugged a vacum line on the intake and the noise stopped. my warranties almost up and i wanto go ahead and fix the noise (its rather embarassing, and it makes me nervous) Have any of you ever heard of the itake manifold causing a noise like this? I dont really trust the dealer i bought the car from now, as they have weaseled their way out of several issues on the warranty like warped break rotors, 2 bad axles and so on. n another note, does anyone know if these engines have VVT i know some of the 2.3 engines did .i just helped my friend replace the vvt on his mazdaspeed 6 2.3 MZR (i know different design) Im told that failing VVT can sound similar.
FusionDiffusion
The 2.3L does have a swirl control valve that is vacuum actuated. The linkage is on the side of the intake manifold. What the mechanic said sounds plausible to me. Your engine does have variable intake cam timing.

Would a new ford OEM manifold come with the likage?
montematt
I did some research and the 1.8 and 2.0 engines seem to famous for this issue, it looks like a possible solution is simply deleting the valves. ive also read the the 1.8 and 2.0 had a kit available to replace these, does anyone know if these are available for the 2.3?

I replaced the Intake last night with a brand new one from Levitt town ford. The original clattering noise is gone. Yay! Unfortunateley, i now have another noise to deal with. If your car is making a knocking sound, try removing the vacuum hose from one of the Vacuum actuators on the fron of the intake (dont remember which one) If the noise stops, its time to replace the Intake. PS, does anyone know if Ford Did a recall like mazda on the VVTs in these engines?
