Ldelisio
So I have a problem after trying to jump someone's car. It involves a car with a push button which I wasn't aware of as well as didn't know it would damage it or my car. But after attempting I have battery light which indicates something wrong with the charging and now I also have an abs light as well as the parking brake light when the brake isn't engaged. I'm guessing something is now wrong with the alternator but if anyone has suggestions let me know please. Checked fuses but couldn't find anything or if you have a suggestion of a fuse to check let me know please. Thanks Luke
akirby
Did you check the fuses under the hood, too? If they're all ok try disconnecting the negative battery terminal for a few minutes.
Ldelisio
yeah just tried didnt work thanks for the suggestion though. looks like all fuses under the hood are good.
FusionDiffusion
ABS has a lot of fuses. Make sure you are testing them properly and not just sort of looking at them in place. Under hood: #8 (40A) #10 (30A) Under dash: #13 (7.5A) #23 (7.5A) #27 (7.5A) #28 (10A) The alternator field fuse is #17 (10A) under the hood. If you crossed cables on the other car then you probably blew one or both of the 12 ga. fusible links on the power wire between the battery and the alternator. I don't think it has anything to do with a push button... Edited May 1, 2014 by FusionDiffusion
Ldelisio
i checked all those fuses with an ohmmeter and they all checked out. although i don't know where that 12 ga fuse on the wire is. Ill have to check that out later today. is it the wires just coming out of the alternator?
FusionDiffusion
There should be one big wire that comes out of the alternator and goes to the positive battery post. If you look near the battery on the positive cables I think you'll find the megafuses.
Ldelisio
Okay yeah I confirmed I was getting voltage to the alternator with my voltmeter. And now that I think about it I think rain could have been the cause, I live in pensacola and we did get a lot of rain although my car was not flooded it might have been a cause.
Ldelisio
HELP replaced the alternator today and it still isn't charging. I guess it could be the new alternator but I find that unlikely, any suggestions would be great. It looks like it is spinning and I don't know how to test that besides the quality of the belt which looks good. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated
Ldelisio
Is there a way to test the output directly from the alternator?
akirby
Put a voltmeter on the alternator lead going to the battery. Should be 12 - 14.5 volts.
FusionDiffusion
If the megafuses are blown, you won't get any charging to the battery. Test the voltage at both the alternator output terminal and at the battery. They should be virtually the same. If you have 14-15V at the alternator and only about 11-12V at the battery then you know the megafuses are blown.
Ldelisio
Yeah I had 12v there with the car off so i know that the fuses are blown. I'm thinking maybe they gave me a bad alternator. Took out the new one and am going to bring it to advanced to test it out
Ldelisio
Hey so got the alternator out and had advanced auto parts check it and it checked good. Put it back in and still no good. Belt is wicked tight and the alternator is grounded and the only thing I don't know about is this powertrain control module and instrument cluster which seems according the the schematic outputs "I" and "s" go to. Any suggestions
Ldelisio
Could a bad PCM make the alternator not work?
akirby
Dude - you're way over your head. Time to get some professional help.
Ldelisio
Yeah I wouldn't even deal with the PCM just wanted to know if that could prevent it from charging.
akirby
I think it's possible since it can control the amount of charging that occurs.
Ldelisio
So took it to a mechanic and they were convinced it was a bad alternator and I did replace it. Although it is charging now the battery light remains on with the abs and parking break light. Any suggestions.
Waldo
If the ABS light is on, you should be able to read a code.
akirby
If the battery light is on then that usually means it isn't charging.
FusionDiffusion
So took it to a mechanic and they were convinced it was a bad alternator and I did replace it. Although it is charging now the battery light remains on with the abs and parking break light. Any suggestions. What evidence do you have to support that it is charging?
Ldelisio
Well I got 13.5 volt output indication with my voltmeter so it's definitely charging. Although the lights are still all on.. It's at the shop now and they are trying to figure it out. Looks like it's stumping them too... I'll keep you updated.
Ldelisio
It also isn't running correctly with a very low idle and one time while the mechanic was pulling codes it started to overheat because the fan didn't turn on(he did see a fan circuit fail). There is some control module that has failed I think and it's just a matter of finding which one.
FusionDiffusion
This shouldn't be that hard to figure out. If the shop is good, they should know what module is the problem in only a few minutes. If they don't have a definitive answer for you by tomorrow you need to find a more qualified shop. Are the battery terminals clean and tight? Where did you put your meter probes when you measured the 13.5 volts? Edited May 6, 2014 by FusionDiffusion
Ldelisio
Yeah that's what I was thinking. The shop seems very good with good recommendations but maybe a ford dealer would be better, even for the price, since they know their fords.
