Naitian Wang
Hey, I'm quite worry about a lot of oil covering the threads and bottom of the middle two spark plugs. The other two are good. I heard that if oil on the bottom, it means mechanical issue and may need expensive repair. I replaced valve cover gasket today. After I pulled the valve cover, there was just a little oil on the top part. After I unscrew the plug, the threads and bottom was covered by oil. I think I will check them again tomorrow or after drive a while. Car runs fine. No engine light on. But I'm thinking about it. Anyone have any ideas? I'm on a tight budget, can't bring this to a mechanic. Its a 2007 fusion, 2.3l. Thanks! Edited May 4, 2014 by Naitian Wang
akirby
If it's running ok then I wouldn't do anything yet. Probably worn rings letting oil into the combustion chamber. Not a cheap or easy fix.
Naitian Wang
I checked spark plug again. No oil on tips now. I was over worried. The new valve cover gasket works.
Waldo
If there was oil in there, it probably just flowed down the spark plug as you pulled it out. Keep an eye on it, but I think you already have your answer.
montematt
Im having the same issue with my 2.3. it has a clattering sound coming from the head when its warm. (kind of sounds like a quiet diesal) and it knocks noticably when its warming up. between 12-1300 Rpm.I found out that the last time the oil was changed 5w-30 was put in it. (never going there again), i pulled three plugs 2 had threads covered in oil, the other was dry.Im wondering if you guys have any ideas on this one, ive heard that running anything other than 5w20 can damage the cam lobes.if this is the case is it something i need to fix right away or do i have a few thousand miles.
akirby
I doubt 5w-30 would hurt it like that. Do you have leaking valve cover gaskets?
montematt
I doubt 5w-30 would hurt it like that. Do you have leaking valve cover gaskets? Not to my knowledge, when i pulled out the plug the socket and the top of the plug were clean along with the plug boot.

Joe E Goodart
I had both 2007 Escape and 2008 Fusion with leaking head cover gasket. Cost about 18 bucks and an hr or so of time to repair. Joe
