Towing a trailer

Recommended Posts

This might be a dumb question, but what are the negative effects of towing a very small trailer with a 250 pound dirt bike. In the manual ford says that the hybrid is not rated for towing but if were only talking about 500 pounds I can't see that being a problem. What would the difference be if I towed a trailer or had 3 adult passengers in the back seat? If i did tow the trailer with a dirt bike I would not go over 60mph.

Was thinking of getting this trailer

http://www.harborfreight.com/automotive-motorcycle/trailer-accessories/870-lb-capacity-40-inch-x-49-inch-heavy-duty-utility-trailer-with-8-inch-wheels-and-tires-42708.html

So with the dirt bike weighing 269 pounds and the trailer weighing 130 pounds thats a total of 399 pounds.

Towing a trailer puts different stresses on the rear subframe structure from that of carrying passengers in the back seat. The car was designed for the latter, not the former. As stated by Mike B above, who knows how the Hybrid-specific components would react to this type of stress?

That said, I believe there may be members here who tow light loads with Hybrids. Maybe someone with experience will weigh in.

1)The Fusion / Milan are built on a unibody  thus NO FRAME
Some hitch manufacturers make hitches for SOME unibody cars, but the engineering is very important.
2) The Hybrid does NOT have a "normal" transmission" it has teh CVT transmission, a great concept, but cannot survive being overloaded due to towing.. maybe 500# would be OK..

Since this post is 8 years old I doubt this guy still has his "hybrid"

I would expect to have little to no towing capacity with a hybrid because of the extra weight of the battery pack.  These cars are not designed for towing and even the non hybrids should never try and pull more than 1K lbs, even 750lbs sounds like too much.
