Fusion Ecoboost Fuel Mileage

We have a 2014 Ruby Red Fusion SE,  the wife wanted cloth seats so we had to order it with 2'0 motor and cloth seats..  Man, that car will run.  we get 21 or 22 around town and 27 to 29 on the highways, maybe would get more if I stayed off the gas pedal.

morning folks.

long story short, i was driving a 2015 2.5 rental for about 2 1/2 weeks and the last time i filled the tank i got an estimated km's to empty reading of just over 700km's. nice i thought.

went ahead and bought a 2014 2.0 se awd with 12 000k on it, and while i was expecting a slight decrease in the estimated km's to empty, i'm seeing a reading of about 565, with 10.2- 10.4 L/100kms. (about 24 mpg)

 

not impressed.

any thoughts?

What you are getting from 2.0 litre AWD is about right for this time of year. You are driving a car that is significantly heavier than the rental FWD with the 2.5, and the AWD system is also going eat a bit. The winter blends also will yield lower fuel economy and winter also adds other variables such as increased rolling resistance. The Ecoboosts get their best fuel economy if you stay as much out of boost as possible. At 60mph, my FWD 2.0 gets 33-34 mpg right now but gets a combined 23-25mpg with the nasty city traffic I put up with. If I aggressively jockey for positiom trying to get onto the highway, my combined average will easily hit 19-22mpg.

2014 SE 1.5L with just over 11,000km's averaging 34mpg's (7L/100km)...mostly rural and town driving. I could be getting better but it has been very cold for the last couple weeks so I've been using the remote start to let it warm up every morning and afternoon. Average driving habits and I use the cruise control all the time.

That is exactly why I get so tired of these car magazines complaining about Ecoboost fuel economy. Not a single car C&D tests gets advertised fuel economy, and yet they let that pass unless they are testing an Ecoboost Ford. Those of us who drive in the real world and drive like normal civilised people do get pretty decent fuel economy. Averaging 34mpg is stellar considering that the 1.5 has a really good and usable torque band should you wish to really dive into the boost. It won't win any drag races, but that isn't the point as Ecoboosts really increase drivability by giving you torque where you need it, and not way up in the rpms that will very seldome be explored.

I have been disappointed with the mileage I'm getting with my 2015 Fusion Titanium. The best I can get around town is 20.2 and that's driving like a little old man out for a Sunday drive. I previously owned a Nissan Altima with a 3.5 V6 and it would get 23 all day long in the city. Even on highways I get 27 at best while the Nissan would get around 30. I've now got 5000 miles on it and was hoping it would improve with time but it hasn't. I'm going to try premium with the next tank and see how much it improves. Around here, a lot of stations carrry ethanol free gas in premium and regular, but I'm hesitant to pay the ethanol free prices. I could drive down to the station near the local race track and buy some of gas from their racing fuel pump. That's probably 6 or 7 bucks a gallon and would probably blow the 2.0 engine up though.

IMO the "5000 mile" break-in is mis-understood -- it applies more to the driver than the car and varies accordingly. I haven't experienced it to any significant degree on my Fusion, Edge or Focus (I keep mileage logs). Rather, I think it is more related to the driver adapting to the optimal mileage potential of the car.

 

Here are some points to consider:

1. Ethanol degrades your mileage

2. City mileage varies greatly depending on the city. I get about 5 mpg better mileage in Gilbert AZ than Escondido, CA

3. Highway mileage can also vary by about 5 MPG just from traffic (flowing traffic is good, but eratic, stop and go and no traffic is not).

4. If you're NOT driving like an old lady, you're probably using the Turbo -- it's hard not to and there is no gauge to show you whether you're using it or not. Unfortunately use of the turbo can be a mileage killer. So are your lower gears, in addition to use of brakes.

 

A good tool to use is your instant MPG screen -- provides instant feedback and is a great instructional tool for optimizing your driving style for mileage.

2015 SE with the 2.0l EB here. A little over 13k miles, overall average since purchased is 26.4mpg. I know how to drive efficiently, but like a lot of people on here, like to get on it a few times a week!

 

Daily commute (50/50 highway, surface streets) during a normal week I get around 20-22mpg.

Highway, road trips can get 33-36mpg depending on elevation changes, cargo load. I usually average around 10 mph over speed limit, but rarely do 90mph or faster.

 

I second roadrunner's recommendation of the instant mpg screen - its what I use 99% of the time. Helps keep you cognizant of how your driving can affect mileage.

In my city driving I am constantly above the 20 MPG mark in the instant MPG view. I can't seem to get over 20 MPG in a long span of time. I guess the brief moments where I have to go from a stop to the speed limit really kill that MPG even if I try and grandma it.

 

Oh well, luckily I am decently established in life and can afford the gas. If I were a poor college student I would be flipping the F out over it.

 

 

I decided to experiment with 91 oct. and driving so light-footed that it angered other drivers. With that combination I could get 25 MPG city. I suspect the AWD in my car is keeping the MPG down somewhat.
