2013 Fusion SE - Power Steering Failure

I have had my 2013 Ford Fusion for less than 2 years. I have enjoyed the car very much. It has had a few issues along the way, but nothing major. Yesterday, the Electronic Power Assisted Steering (EPAS) system failed causing the car to switch to manual steering. Thankfully this did not occur while driving the highway. In doing some research, I have learned that this has been a common issue with the Fusion. And as far as I can tell, Ford has issued recalls for the 2010 - 2012 models but has yet to expand it into the 2013 - 2015 models. Thankfully the issue will be covered by warranty. But where I am most concerned is: (1) is this an epidemic, are other owners of the new fusions experiencing this same issue? and (2) if so, has ford been able to fix the issue or has their fix only be a temporary one and the issue has occurred again? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

If it helps, my Fusion is the SE model, but it is not the Hybrid, Energi, or Ecoboost models. It has the basic 2.5L engine.

Thanks, dm

Ford has yet to recall any of the Fusions for power steering defects yet, although they have for other models. My 2010 went through three power steering racks. The first two were covered under warranty and the last one was not and cost me $1,800+. I'm waiting for Ford to include the Fusions and I will get my money back. I also filed a complaint with NHTSA.

Thanks hermans. This is good information to hear. I have yet to hear from the dealership as to what caused it or what they can do to address the issue. Do you know if your repairs fell under the bumber 2 bumper warranty or the powertrain warranty? i only ask b/c i am nearing the end of my bumper to bumper warranty and not sure i want to risk it if this going to be an ongoing issue.

Steering components are not, by definition, part of the powertrain. Your warranty guide is clear on this:

(1) Your vehicle’s Powertrain components are covered for five years or
60,000 miles, whichever occurs first. The extended coverage applies to
the Engine: all internal lubricated parts, cylinder block, cylinder heads,
electrical fuel pump, electronic engine control unit, engine mounts,
flywheel, injection pump, manifold (exhaust and intake), manifold bolts,
oil pan, oil pump, seals and gaskets, thermostat, thermostat housing,
timing chain cover, timing chain (gears or belt),
turbocharger/supercharger unit, valve covers, water pump;

Transmission: all internal parts, clutch cover, seals and gaskets, torque
converter, transfer case (including all internal parts), transmission case,
transmission mounts; Front-Wheel Drive: axle shafts, bearings (front
and rear), center support bearing, drive shafts, final drive housing
(including all internal parts), hubs-automatic front locking (four-wheel
drive), locking rings (four-wheel drive), seals and gaskets, universal and
constant velocity joints; Rear-Wheel Drive: axle shafts, bearings (front
and rear), center support bearing, drive axle housing (including all
internal parts), drive shaft, propeller shafts, retainers, supports, seals and
gaskets, universal and constant velocity joints.

Have you heard any news from your dealership this morning, drm2013? How many miles are on your Fusion? I'm here if you need any assistance. :)

Crystal - I spoke with the dealership yesterday. The informed that they will need to replace the power steering module. My Fusion has approximately 18,000 miles on it.

Wow, 6 occurrences banding together to ultimately end up getting nothing from Ford. Even based on the exaggerated numbers in the filing, there are a hundred or so complaints in hundreds of thousands of cars, so the incidence rate is around .023%. That's like being afraid to fly based on media coverage of 1000 or so annual deaths out of tens of MILLIONS of people who fly a year (just out of the 3 largest airports in the US). It's ridiculous how people think that something that happens to them is happening to everyone.
