Wrench Light / No throttle body code

Recommended Posts

I have a 2007 Fusion SE with 130,000 miles. I've had the car a year & a half now & the check engine light has always been on. 1 yr ago the wrench light came on & I had a couple rough starts. One morning the car started so rough it was almost backfiring & the wrench light came on. I re-started & it was off. I googled & found all the throttle body problems & decided to take my chances & clean mine, to my surprise it worked until 2 days ago. Now fast forward a year & here I am. So far it hasn't stalled but the light comes on while I'm driving & power seems to get a little weak & when I come to a stop it hesitates some so I did another cleaning but it didn't seem to work this time around. I went to O'reily's yesterday & had the code reader scan for codes & got codes P0491 & P0128 neither of which are throttle body codes. Now what? Anybody have any advice on this?

I'm in MN & spring has sprung. The thing though, is that those codes are with the check engine light & that's not what is causing my problem. The wrench light goes on & I can feel the car lose power. It doesn't shake or die like others have said with their throttle bodies, just bogs down some & I can feel it. Say I'm cruising down the highway at 60 mph & the wrench light goes on I feel a bog down then if I have to slow to say 50 mph, it's hard for the car to get back up to 60 mph. When I come to a complete stop the car grumbles & idles so low that it feels like it's gonna die. The throttle doesn't seem stuck to me though. When I plug in the code reader should I have my car running with the wrench light on? O'reily had my car off with the ignition in the on position & that's how I got the two codes that I got.

Thank you for your reply, I will have my mechanic check the air pump & relay on Monday, I just don't have a lot of money to let them examine my car for days or another car to get to work so I'm trying to diagnose the best I can on my own & even fix on my own what I can. I can swap out the throttle body myself but don't want to do that if that's not my problem.

Well oddly I never got a throttle body code but the mechanic did. It was a sensor & the throttle body needed to be replaced & the firmware needed updating. I also had my thermostat replaced & low & behold I have great heat! The air pump relay looks like it needs to be replaced but it's not causing any issues as of now so I'm not going to bother with it. My mechanic said midwestern cars don't even have air pumps usually.

I have a 2012 Ford Fusion. Four days ago, the car would suddenly lose power, shake and come to a stop. I could not accelerate. Luckily I was in town. It did this almost every time I used my car. I found out by Googling 2012 Ford Fusion wrench light that Ford extended their Electronic Throttle Body warranty for 2009-2013 Ford Fusions, Escapes, Mercury Mariners and Mercury Milans to 150,000 miles or 10 years. I ran off the information, took it into my local Ford Dealership, Crow-Moddie Ford, and they looked it up. My research was correct and they are replacing the throttle body at no cost to me.

That's great Becky, unfortunately for me my car doesn't fall into that extended warranty as it's a 2007. I never did update again after the throttle body replacement. I had both the throttle body & thermostat replaced just to have the car bog down again 3 weeks later. Found out that my car was manufactured in California & they have different emmisions standards & I had a bad secondary air flow pump & it was full of water. Replaced it & drove the car for a year before having to replace the damn thermostat again. In the mean time I also had the speed sensor go bad & that was replaced as well. This car has been a lemon since I bought it.

Somebody at Ford told you that? Unbelievable. No Fusion has ever been built in CA. Look at the label under the hood to see if your car meets CA emissions standards.

And for the record, the plant that builds Fusions in Mexico has the best quality in Ford's system.

I actually could have written this post. I had the same issue, 2007 Fusion, currently 155K miles. Had the air pump replaced in January 2016 - exact symptoms as you...wrench light, shudder/hesitation at stop. First thought it was the throttle body, so replaced that...same issues. Replaced the air pump and it was fine until this past Saturday night. Wrench light/hesitation when coming to a stop. I haven't gotten to my mechanic to pull codes, but I'm guessing it is the air pump again.

I'm in New Jersey. I wasn't sure if it was a coincidence that this happened pretty much the same time of year last year. LIke I mentioned, it happened this past Saturday night and not since. But last year it was the same issue. it would come on a few times over a month or so, then more and more frequently. I was able to turn off/restart the car and it would be fine. It would always come on w/in 15 seconds or so of starting the car...it never actually came on while I was driving. So once the car was started and no light, I knew the car would be fine at least until I restarted it.

I'm going to check w/my mechanic to see if it is warrantied. I had my emissions inspection this past July and it passed, so I'm good until July 2018. I've been doing some research and see there is a debate whether the air pump is even needed :(

diannenj you experience the same weather we do & I find it too coincidental that we both had problems with our cars the same time of year, mine being spring time yours being fall. Definitely talk to your mechanic about water in the hose & pump. I don't know what NJ emissions rules are but my car has a secondary air flow system that is a California emissions rule, that doesn't apply to MN but when I asked my mechanic if I could just have it removed, his response was no. He explained that it could be removed & that it wouldn't make a difference law wise here but it could cause problems in the computer & set off error codes that could set a series of things to go wrong. Back before cars ran on computers this wouldn't have been an issue. Good luck to you, I'm hoping to get rid of this lemon car before it breaks again.

Reviving this thread...I posted earlier that I had the Secondary Air Injection pump replace in January 2016. Everything was fine. November of 2016, wrench light came on again with same symptoms. Never came back on again and car was running great until today. Wrench light came on and had same issues, poor acceleration and shuddering when coming to a stop. I turned car off and restarted and it was fine rest of the way home. Bringing it to my mechanic tomorrow so they can run diagnostics. I believe the air pump is covered under a 2 year warranty so if that is the issue, I guess I'll only have to pay for labor.
