New Rust

Winter was hard on the Fusion. The usual rust spot is back on the trunk lid by the chrome trim. Thought I fixed it last summer, but no luck. I also found a new spot inside the rear passenger side door. It bubbled up pretty good. I'm surprised as I wash inside the door frames each time I clean the car, and wax inside the door frames once a year. Anyone else have this issue?

I had this same identical issue with my last Brand New Mercury. It was actually starting even from new! What worked for me, was to dremel sand the area, and apply Por 15 coating. This slowed the process down substantially. It will eventually, go all the way through to the exterior :( But, it might slow down enough, not to be notable for a couple of years. It doesn't seem to make sense how many People claim new cars don't rust. When we looked for ours last year - several cars, which ran the gamut of makers, had rust holes in and underneath to the point my dog could put their head through! I am only talking 5-7 year old cars. Yea they don't rust.... This is bad climate for cars though, not including the brine now applied to roads exponentially.

Sorry for the bump...been busy elsewhere. Anyhoo... I discovered rust in the exact same spot this past summer. Almost the same size. It's probably been going on for a year (two+?), but since I rarely use the rear doors, especially the passenger side, I didn't notice it until now.

I sanded it, cleaned it, and put several coats of Rust Oleum's Rust Converter on it (similar to Por 15). Since it's on the inside/side of the door where next to no one sees it, I didn't bother repainting it. So far, it hasn't seemed to have spread/gotten any worse in the nearly 6 months since I did the work on it.

I fixed the spot too, but I'll need to redo it this spring. It's just something about that place in the seam. I'll need to redo the spot on the trunk lid also. Easy work, and considering I live in the land of road salt and brine, if that's as bad as it gets I'll be lucky.
