2013 Fusion SE Posessed and Haunted

I am new here but not new to Forums. I typically hang around on the Superduty sites but I need help with this car.

I have a Ginger Ale 2013 Fusion SE 2.5L with 33,000 miles on it, bought it new 2 years ago. The car has been relatively trouble free until recently, well, I say that but we have been fighting a rough shifting transmission for a year. Recently we started having an issue with the My Touch system not coming on cold mornings, eventually the system would come on. The dealer looked at it and could not duplicate the problem or get any codes. The My Touch then started shifting from A/C to heat on its own. We took it back in for the radio still not coming on and this problem, they ordered an APM.

While waiting for the APM the car would not start after work one day, nothing happened when turning the key. Once the car started up we were taking it to the dealer and it cut off and stalled on railroad tracks. It restarted and we left it at the dealer, they found a bad throttle body and reprogrammed the start module. The APM was still on order.

Two weeks past and the dealer had us run by and get codes off of the system to reorder the APM.

That night we were out, started it up and the lights would not come on, hoping they would come on we drove a 1/4 through the parking lot, they finally decided to come on. I called the dealer and the APM was in, we took it in the next morning, no problem found with the lights, no codes.

The dealer installed the APM, we picked up the car, drove it 15 miles and the radio quit. Immediately we drove back to the dealer, they pulled it in and saw that the cluster and radio were on different stations with static but no codes. They put us in a 2014 Fusion, that was 3 weeks ago. They can't find a problem with the car but knows one exists.

We are very dissatisfied with backend Ford support, the dealer has done everything they can to help us. We have known the owners for years and are friends of ours.

Has anybody else had these gremlins? We are about ready to trade it in.

New update: Car acted up for dealer, radio problem seems to be related to dead draw in the system causing the battery to die because of an electrical "noise" issue, with everything unplugged including the alternator there is still a draw in the system. Dealer is suspect of the BCM

Welcome to the forum, coolharts! I'm Crystal, the Ford Service rep here. Send me your information in a private message (PM); I'll get this into the hands of your regional customer service manager. In your message, please include your full name, best daytime phone number, VIN, current mileage, and servicing dealership. Leave the rest to me. :)

Hi FYI I purchased a new titanium end of 2012 and have had nothing but similar problems with sync , APM , no radio volume, accent lights intermittent etc. After one year of being in and out of service with no permanent fixt I filed a lemon law suit with the short story being I took a cash settlement even though I was hoping to return the vehicle. I too wrote letters to all the way up to Ford CEO but would only get high level customer service rep returning then. Was finally told that they had prepared techincal service bulletins and took car in to have APM reset and other tweaks. Since then I have been making regular trips to the dealer for them to reset APM and other modules but usually within 2-3 weeks something will start acting up and I am back having module reset. All with only 11,000 miles. One of the service guys told me that the wires on the harnesses are so thin to save money that he thinks they short out or do not reset the modules. I will be putting car up for sale next month my advise would be to do the same . IF not be sure you get a copy of the extended warranty on the sync module I think they will honor warranty on the APM or what controls the sync for life of vehicle if I remember correctly. Good luck

That's a bummer. Ford should just let them try a new BCM and get it over with.

Yeah, I don't understand the manufacturers now. When I worked as a service manager I would not stop to get a car fixed, if it cost Ford money, oh well, the customer came first. Now they penny pinch every warranty repair and could care less how the customer feels or is inconvenienced. I am glad I got out of the car business.

It looks like its time to get Crystal Involved. If the issue is not the modules then there is a problem in the wiring or the connectors. Either way its going to take a bit of time to dig into. If it were me I would put an ampmeter on the battery and start unplugging modules one at a time. Once the current draw disappears you have your culprit.

I had an 1985 Cougar with the same problem and it turned out to be two wires that had been nicked during the assembly process. Hope this helps

Years ago our club toured the, now closed, Wixom, MI Lincoln assembly plant. At the point in the process where the wiring harnesses were installed, the tour guide was emphasizing how important it was to handle the harnesses carefully, while behind him the line workers were tossing the harnesses through the windshield opening (no glass yet) where they landed on the bare steel floors of the body shells with a bang. Someone pointed this out and they said they'd get right on it and put a stop to it.

I'm sure they're much more careful these days but who knows? When the electronics are working right, it's great. When they're not, gremlins can be difficult to track down.

I have been in contact with the Ford rep and dealer. The district Field Service Engineer and others are heavily involved and making progress with a possible solution to the radio and draw problem, they are hitting one problem at a time.

I'm sorry to hear about your problems but am glad Ford is making a serious effort to solve them. I have had similar issues but sporatic so far and on a smaller scale (battery died only once to date, with various wierd behavious). Even finding out what it isn't has been very instructive; your ultimate solution will go a long ways toward helping others find a plausable (and hopefully common) cause! Thanks for posting the details and lets hope they get your problems solved soon!

Arghh!!! Still not right, phone syncs, calls can go out and in but can't hear anything, tried 2 phones. My Touch Phonebook screen sensitivity is off, hit the selection and it pulls the name below it. There is also a motor noise in the dash. Will be calling dealer on Monday morning. THIS IS SO FRUSTRATING!!!! All of these problems were not part of the original problem.

We have the car back again, the dealer had to reload the SYNC system to fix the phone issue and replaced a small fan under the dash that pulls interior air across a sensor to read the temperature in the car for the automatic temperature control system. Crossing my fingers everything is working now.

So far so good, the car appears to be repaired.

The problem all stemmed from a faulty replacement APM installed to repair the radio, the APM was causing a draw that would drain the battery overnight. In an effort to find the problem Ford replaced the alternator, body control module and several other items. Once the APM was determined to be the failed part a replacement was ordered and installed and the draw was fixed.

The Ford Reps assisted the dealer by escalating the support case up the chain to the field engineers and assisting the dealer with the parts orders.
