I am on vacation and last night on the interstate my check engine light came on. I had just filled it up about 1 hour earlier with 93 octane and I do not feel it runs any different but the fuel mileage is no as good. I stopped by the parts store and had the codes read and they are as follows; P144c Emission system purge flow performance during boost, P018C Fuel pressure sensor B low, P008a Low pressure fuel system pressure too low,

We are 600 miles fro the dealer we got it from but I am going to have it at the local Ford dealer Monday morning to have it looked at. We have a long drive Monday night and I hope it is nothing too big. I am wondering if any other fusion owners has has such issue. It is a 2013 1.6 EcoBoost with 36,000 miles. Thanks

Getting this into the hands of your dealership is the best next step, ocracokenc; I'm glad you're having them take a look today. Be sure to come back and tell us what you find out. If you need my assistance, I'll be here.

Thank you. I took it to the local Ford dealer and they took me right in. The tech says it is the sensor on the fuel rail but the actual fuel rail pressure is with in spec. I am dropping it off at the dealer tomorrow when we get back to Florida. I have a appointment anyway because for a certified pre-owned Ford the tires are not good at all.

Hi,

Did you get it fixed? I got the same error code without the CEL, just a message on the dashboard monitor with a wrench. I Did check it with an OBD reader and found the code p144c.

Did you get it fixed under warranty ?

I had the same issue at 52K and received a P144A code which has to do with the evaporative emissions systems. I just had the CEL come on, did you ever figure oput what the issue was, and if it was fixed?

Sorry to take so long to follow up but I forgot that I had started this thread, I know it stinks when people do not follow up. The car made it back home fine and the CEL did not come back on. The local dealer could not find anything wrong and said it may have just been a fluke. They tested the car again and it was fine. We now have 45,000 miles on the car and it has not happened again. I am disappointed in a few things though. First is all the decals are falling off, Second the hood release bracket inside the car is broken and the windshield washer fluid pump motor runs but does not pump fluid. We have a extended warranty that has a $100 deductible so I guess I will get all these minor issue's fixed.

I have a appointment in a week to have 2 or 3 recalls fixed and I will add this stuff to the list. My only complaint with the car is my 2015 Crew Cab truck not made by Ford will get just as good fuel mileage as the 1.6 EcoBoost in town. ?????????

Hi ocracokenc,

Have you made an appointment for your other concerns since your post?

My CEL came on, took to dealer adn they said it was P144c, Purge Valve Solenoid. Instead of paying them the $350 they wanted, I bought the valve from Fordparts.com for $25 and replaced. CEL went out for about a week and came back on, reading same code. What else could be casuing it to come on under P144c??

Is this not covered under emissions warranty? That's what I'd try to get the dealer to do. Failing that, contact the Ford rep on this forum and get an assist.

Any trouble filling up? If the tank is capless, dirt will eventually get in/around the seal on the flap. There may even be blockages in the filler pipe that can only be resolved by pipe replacement.

You could try disconnecting the neg terminal on the battery for 15-30 minutes and let the PCM reset, but I don't recommend that if you are willing to have the dealer take a gander at this problem. Maybe the reset will work, maybe it will be a case of kicking the ball down the road.

EDIT:

P144C - Evaporative Emission System Purge Check Valve Performance
Description: The EVAP check valve test is performed during minimal boost conditions, once per drive cycle, when entry conditions are met. This DTC sets when the fuel tank pressure exceeds a calibrated amount within a specified amount of time during the test.
Possible Causes:
Restricted EVAP ejector connections at the intake air system
Stuck open EVAP check valve
Stuck closed EVAP check valve
Damaged EVAP ejector
Damaged EVAP check valve
HX49 CHECK THE EVAP EJECTOR CONNECTIONS
Remove the EVAP ejector from the vehicle. Refer to the Workshop Manual Section 303-13, Evaporative Emissions.
Visually inspect the EVAP ejector connections at the intake air system tube for a restriction.
Visually inspect the EVAP ejector connections for a restriction.
Is a concern present?
Yes
  1. REPAIR as necessary.
  2. Clear the PCM DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
No
  1. INSTALL a new Evaporative Emission (EVAP) Purge valve. REFER to the Workshop Manual Section 303-13, Evaporative Emissions.
  2. Clear the PCM DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
Not sure where the ejector is on the Fusion, but here is a TSB on the Escape describing it:
TSB's
Escape vapor ejector
Posted on June 14, 2013 by Information provided by Identifix Inc.

Some 2013 Ford Escape vehicles built on or before 7-18-12 and equipped with a 1.6L or 2.0L gasoline turbocharged direct injection (GTDI) engine may exhibit a malfunction indicator lamp on, with DTC P144C stored in the powertrain control module memory.

This may be due to an evaporative emissions vapor ejector installed backwards and/or a blocked vapor purge line port in the air cleaner outlet pipe assembly.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

  1. Remove the engine cover for access.
  2. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
  3. Inspect vapor ejector installation. If the arrow on the vapor ejector indicates proper installation as shown in the photo, proceed to Step 6. If vapor ejector installation is incorrect, proceed to Step 4.
  4. Loosen the two clamps, remove the bolt (2.0L only) and remove the air intake duct center section.
  5. Replace the evaporative emission canister purge valve assembly. Removal of the underbody shield is required on 1.6L GTDI equipped vehicles. Proceed to Step 7.
  6. Disconnect the evaporative emission vapor purge line from the air intake duct center section.
  7. Insert a plastic tie strap, at least 4.0mm (0.157 inches) wide, into the vapor purge line port on the air intake duct center section to determine if it is blocked by flashing. A slight bend is necessary to pass through the angled port orifice. A 4.0mm opening is required for proper system operation. If the tie strap easily passes through the vapor purge line port, proceed to Step 9. If not, proceed to Step 8.
  8. Replace the air cleaner outlet pipe assembly. Tighten the clamp and bolt (2.0L only) to 44 in.-lbs. (5 Nm). Proceed to Step 11.
  9. Install the air intake duct center section. Tighten all fasteners to 44 in.-lbs. (5 Nm).
  10. Connect evaporative emission vapor purge line to air intake duct center section.
  11. Connect battery ground cable and reinstall the engine cover.

Have you had the problem fixed yet, because I am having the same issues with my 2013 Fusion SE 1.6 Ecoboost and the fast running electric fan and the smell of burnt plastic. This only happens when I drive at freeway speeds above 65 MPH for about 25 to 35 minutes. I had trouble going up the hills on California Route 4 East into Stanislaus County. I cound not get the car to drive more than 40 MPH when the road speed is 55. I have to keep pulling over to let the car cool down. But Ford Said that they could not find any problems with this car and charged me $200.00 for nothing and sent me on my way with the same problems. Also I pay for an extended warrenty and they too do not cover anything I have a problem with. Waste of money and time and I cannot get in contact with ford, they just want nothing to do with this BULL*** they sell us. I'm just Heartbroken because I am a Ford Car/Truck Person. While Ford Shrugs at me I think I'll just have to move on to Chevy soon. I hate to bust Ford is leaving me out without any help and keep on asking for more payments on something they will not fix.

You should understand that dealers are not Ford - they're independent businesses. There are good ones and bad ones. If you have a Ford ESP you can take it to any Ford dealer for service. I suggest you try a different dealer.

Yes, I have ESP and they said to me that they do not cover Diagnostics and that during the Diagnosis they find a problem then the Diagnosis is waived. Although the dealers tend to alway find nothing wrong with this fusion after I gave them a detailed line about all the things that is not normal with the car but they said the car runs good and send me straight to the cashier and charge me out of pocket and I have paid for a non fixed car and I since paid $547.00 and my car was left at the shop for over 5 days. When I paid them again I went about 10 miles way and my car shut off on the freeway. Called the dealer and they said that there is nothing they can do anything else? I hung up being upset. Then I turned the key on again and the car started up and went again for a few miles again on the freeway and again it tried to shut off but stayed running at low power. I will try to take it to another dealer, but in the meantime I am scared to drive it paying a heavy monthly car payment and then the car is broken and the place where I bought it from is up in arms and not helping me by keep on asking me to go pay the cashier, that is their main thing Please pay the Cashier before I can get my keys. All they have done was drive my car in the city and hook up a OBD Computer to see if there any codes. But there will never be codes once you turn off the key.

I' think I'm going to get the government involved because this is not right and I just want another car.

IDK if there's a Ford rep on here. Try contacting Ford Customer Service on Twitter @FordService, they may be able to help you out, even get Ford engineers involved if needed. Provide as much documentation as you can.

I have done it and they have gotten back with me through Twitter...Thanks. I'll wait to see what happens next. They have all of my info.

I had the same problem (P144C) and the Ford Tech found the Purge Valve not working. Ford replaced the part (DG9Z_9D289_G _ Tube Assembly - Fuel Vapor Separator).

From: http://www.southbayfordcommercial.com/warranty/emissions-warranty-coverage

During the warranty coverage period, Ford Motor Company warrants that:
  • Your vehicle or engine is designed, built, and equipped to meet – at the time it is sold - the emissions regulations of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
  • Your vehicle or engine is free from emission-related defects in factory-supplied materials or workmanship, which are defects that could prevent the vehicle or engine from conforming to applicable EPA regulations.
  • You will not be charged for diagnosis, repair, replacement, or adjustment of parts containing an emissions-related defect.

My question is:

1) Should this work be covered by the Emissions Warranty 8yr/80k ?

2) Page 20 of Warranty Book says "Evaporative Emission Control System" is covered. Is DG9Z_9D289_G a part of that?

3) Page 21 says "Also covered by the two emissions warranties are all emissions-related bulbs, hoses, clamps, brackets, tubes, gaskets, seals, belts, connectors, non-diesel fuel lines, sensors, and wiring harnesses that are used with the components on the list of parts on Page 20." Part DG9Z_9D289_G _ Tube Assembly - Fuel Vapor Separator should be covered, right?

Thanks, JH
