JerseyGTO
Hello, I'm looking at an AWD as a possible daily driver. I put 25,000 miles/year on my cars in heavy commuter traffic. I was wondering if any owners are putting a lot of miles on their AWD cars and, if so, what (if any) problems you encountered. I'd appreciate any information you could offer. Thanks for your time, JerseyGTO

Thanks for your time, JerseyGTO It sounds silly but the AWD Fusions have lower things gone wrong in the consumer mags. Makes no sence to me. I have found all Fusions both 4 and 6 cyl to be very very problem free cars and hold up well to high miles.

Thanks for your time, JerseyGTO I had a carrier bearing go out on my drive shaft. The whole drive shaft needed to be replaced to fix the problem. It took awhile to get the replacement part. It's running fine now.
komondor
The secret to getting higher mileage out of most any car is doing the fluid changes and inspections. Inspections you can do yourself. Just follow the owners manual and you should be fine. Keep and eye on the tires and rotate every other oil change. Make sure the tire pressure is correct and look under the car at least 2x a year to check for anything loose or worn check your filters don't go by the oil change places they will charge you for filters that are fine. Also know how your fluids should look!
6ft5Import
I owned a Pontiac Vibe AWD 2003 model until I replaced it with my 2010 FF Sport AWD and got about 28-30 mpg with it for the near 7 years I owned it. Even though most consumer magazines say that premium fuel doesn't help the mileage, I got the 30 mpg with the 91-93 octane vs. 87-89 rating. If it's only $0.10/gal. more expensive, it paid off. Using the cruise control as often as possible also helped the mileage. I'm already getting 26 mpg in the Fusion (rated at 25 hiway) with mostly hiway miles at a steady speed of 65 mpg using cruise, and it only has about 1200 miles on it. I expect the mileage will get incrementally better as the engine breaks in.
V X
I have an 05 Escape AWD that just turned 200,000 of what I would call trouble free miles. Also an 08 Taurus AWD with 60,000. Those miles were nowhere as trouble free as the Escape and the Taurus will soon be replaced with an on order 2012 Fusion AWD WOW didn't realize this thread was from 2008. fredvp
The Carrier bearing is going on mine also (2008 with 80K miles). They will have to replace the whole drive shaft. It started making a whirring noise at 50k miles and now its much louder and sounds like marbles grinding up. I hear Ford is replacing the bearing with a new type. I might wait a bit longer before getting it replaced as I have a feeling the noise will just come back after another 50K miles. Not so good if you do high mileage. I would recommend not getting the AWD if you do high mileage. I would certainly not get AWD again on this car. I wonder if the Lincoln version of this car (MKZ?) has a similar issue? FusionDiffusion
If you're under the 5 yr/60,000 mile mark you can still have the driveshaft replaced under the powertrain warranty FYI.
fredvp
Too late I'm at 80K miles.
07AWDFusionSEL
I had a carrier bearing go out on my drive shaft. The whole drive shaft needed to be replaced to fix the problem. It took awhile to get the replacement part. It's running fine now. I too had to have my rear drive shaft replaced at 105,000 miles. It was out of sync/balance and wasn't matching the front drive shaft. A new rear drive shaft, indexed and balanced solved the problem and I have been driving the hell out of it ever since. Cost? $1,035.00.
