Trailer Hitch

Recommended Posts

For the one who are interested of buying a Trailer hitch, I found a 3500LBS one made by valley industries.

Here's the link : http://www.valleyindustries.com/

The only problem is that Fusion does'nt have the holes for it , so you Have to do your own holes to hook up the hitch to the car and you also have to undone the mounting for the exhaust before to be able to install it.

Also you have to pass your bolt by the side of the bumper frame, Thats means that you need to try to pass a wire from the side to the holes then after tie your bolt to that wire and pull it threw the holes . Believe me it's quite a pain in the ass to do.

Also, an Universal Trailer Hitch wiring harness WONT fit on the fusion, because it's working with delta signals( 1 wire do all the flashing light), so you have to buy a converter for your lights, It's a Plug&Play kinda converter, so its easy to install, you dont have to do any splicing fir your wires, The only thing, you need to pass a wire from the back to the battery, and you need also a ground point. All the necessary to do the job is included in the kit.

Thats kit is about 65 bucks.

The hitch is about 150 bucks.

+ labor time if you dont do it by your own.

I can take pictures if someone needs help.

I agree the hitch install was a pain. I ended up just drilling the 1/2" hole up thru the other side of the channel and putting a pipe inside the channel to keep it from colapsing when tightened. I never could get the bolt/square washer fished into the first hole, I think it would have made it if the bolt was 1/2" shorter. Mine is a Hidden Hitch brand but it sounds like they are pretty much the same. I only plan on pulling a small foldup utility trailer with very little weight in it or using the receiver for my bike rack. The trailer is pretty clever...fits in a small shed when not in use.

I need to install a hitch for a lift for my mobility scooter. The lift weighs 168#'s and the scooter weighs 170#'s. I thought I would need a class III hitch, but I'm being told by installers that they can't install a class III hitch on my 2010 Fusion 4 cyl sedan. Any ideas or suggestions?

I'm afraid you're at too much weight. The total weight of your scooter and lift is 338 pounds, that is your "tongue weight", the vertical load on the hitch. The highest capacity hitch available for the Ford Fusion is the Valley, however, noted in the Valley instructions is a warning. The warning states that any auxiliary load carrying product, like a cargo carrier or scooter carrier, will be limited to a 200 pound tongue weight capacity. The 350 pound tongue weight capacity is only for towing a trailer.

From reading some of the other posts I gather the Fusion is not to be used for towing which really makes the extra capacity of the Valley hitch irrelevant. But the hitches can still be used for things like bike racks, cargo carriers, hitch covers and other hitch accessories.

Here's a link to an installation video of the Hidden Hitch # 60282 being installed on a 2010 Fusion. Procedure should be the same for 2011 models. The installation for 2010-2011 models is a bit easier than previous models.

For those of you with 2006-2009 models, here's an install video on a 2008 Fusion for you.

So if I have a class I hitch and pull a small trailer that weighs 250#'s, with my scooter that weighs 168# I would be okay? I really appreciate your sharing your knowledge with me. :burnout:

You're welcome, that's what we're here to do.

You would be within the weight limitations of the hitch, but others in this forum have made comments about Ford specifying not to tow with the Fusion. Break out the Owner's Manual and you should find a section that discusses towing and weight capacities. Check the info there.

The rule of thumb when towing or using a cargo carrier is, you must abide by the lowest rated component, whether that's the hitch, vehicle, draw bar etc. If the hitch can pull 2,000 pounds, but the vehicle manufacturer says not to tow, then the lowest rated component of the towing system would be the vehicle at 0 pounds.

Here is my hidden hitch, I've had mine on for over a year. I've used it for my bike rack and to pull my jet ski.

Does the manual say no towing for both 6 and 4 cylinder models? I'm trying to figure out which Fusion models specify not to tow with in the manuals.

My owner's manual says not to tow at all. I have a 2011 Fusion SEL w/3.0 6cyl.

I personally think that is ridiculous. If you have 240 HP, 4 wheel disc brakes and you are only using a class I hitch, then it is no different than having 5 adults (1000lbs) and say their luggage(250lbs) in the trunk. You can get a small trailer (300lbs) and say put a Harley (650lbs) on the trailer and you're at less weight.

I am getting an etrailer hitch myself.

I would also like more info on this. I installed a hidden hitch on our 08 fusion but just hauled a flat rack to haul more luggage for a trip. But I would like to put a hitch on my '10 sport. I was wondering if I could pull my trailer with a quad on it. The quad is only 480lbs. So how do i figure out the tongue weight? On the 08 the tongue weight for the hitch was 100lbs. but the manual said no towing. But I only hauled with it. I went riding yesterday and seen an 08 hauling a wheeler so I guess it can be done. But how?

Tongue weight should be 10-15% of the total trailer weight. This range ensures that the tongue is not too heavy and not too light. As long as the trailer is not overloaded, simply shifting the weight around on the trailer is how you can make your trailer fall in the 10-15% range.

What brand and model is the bike rack installed on your hitch in the photo? I'm trying to determine what's compatible with the recess dimension of the Hidden Hitch on the Fusion -- some of the racks seem to have a receiver piece that's too short to fit the car without hitting the bumper.

++++++++++++++++++++++++

Wrong car for this. That is a lot to expect from the car.

It's a Thule brand bike rack.

Iceman, I'll bet if I told the Ford dealer I wanted to pull a little Harbor Freight trailer (designed for big motorcycles) with my Fusion Hybrid they would say "No way". What's the difference if I had the trunk loaded with heavy cargo? I probably would not get EV mode often while moving in either case, only at traffic lights.

You know, back in the day it was common practice to pull trailers with cars. Heck My mother had a friend who pulled a horse trailer with a VW Bug! There really is only one reason not to two with a car today....Insurance.

I am going to get a small 8' enclosed to haul my RC planes with and pull it with my 10 Hybrid. I wont get good MPG, but it can pull it Easily, and will weigh less than 1000# fully loaded.
